2033: We round off this dark day with a statement just released by the Aliran exco: ‘Bigotry in the name of Allah’.
The silver lining in all this is that the crowds at the various protests were not as large as many had feared, and the vast majority of Malaysians simply walked away and refused to join in. Many groups and netizens issued statements and comments condemning this lapse into momentary madness. Therein lies a glimmer of hope for a better Malaysia that many of us believe is possible.
Another bright light can be seen over here, where blogger Dr Rafick, a Muslim, has initiated a donation drive to raise funds to repair the Metro Tabernacle Church.
1928: IGP Musa Hasan denied reports that a fourth church was attacked, according to the Insider. He said three demonstrations were held in Kuala Lumpur, two in Pahang, four in Selangor and one in Terengganu and they all ended within 15 minutes. He urged the public not to believe rumours spread by SMS and over the Internet.
1853: Only 25 people protested at the Kampong Baru mosque this afternoon, according to one eye-witness. A Malaysian Insider twitter update put the figure at 20. Malaysiakini put the figure at 50 and noted that other Muslims leaving the mosque told the protesters to “just go home!”
1829: St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church in PJ will be holding an all-night vigil to pray for peace in the country. The prayers will begin at 8.00pm and go on throughout the night until the 6.15am Mass.
1805: Anwar Ibrahim, speaking on mainland Penang, has sharply criticised the Home Ministry and Umno for their poor handling of the issue. He said they should have initiated a dialogue between church leaders and Islamic groups to discuss the issue, according to a journalist.
1800: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng visited the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Penang this evening. Blog reader SamG reports from the Cathedral:
CM reiterated the key message of keeping calm and not to get carried away. Also reported that he had had a meeting with the CPO who had assured all Penangites that they will provide additional security. No demonstrations were reported in Penang as per the briefing by the Special Branch Head who was also present.
1750: Aliran’s Dr Mustafa K Anuar has issued a statement here condemning the attacks.
1650: A fourth church in Kg Subang is said to have been targeted, according to the Insider. But I am unable to obtain further confirmation/verification from church sources. Most press reports say only three churches were targeted.
1450: Najib has condemned the attacks and those reponsible because “this will destroy the harmony of the country”, reports the Insider, which also updates via Twitter:
- Kg Baru mosque protest finishes. 7 minutes ago
- National Mosque protest finishes in 15 minutes, speaker appeals to Catholics to bring matters regarding Islam to Syariah Court. 9 minutes ago
- Earlier in Kg Baru, a group of Muslims urged others not to join the protesters, called them fanatics & accused them of church arson
- A group of 300, mostly from Perkasa, gathered in front of National Mosque to shout “Allahu Akbar”. The rest have walked away.
1430: The crowd disperses as usual after Friday prayers at USM in Penang.
Over in KL, church lawyer Annou Xavier appears satisfied with police co-operation in beefing up security around key churches.
1350: The Friday sermon, heard over the USM mosque loud-speakers in Penang, questions the Herald’s use of the term Allah. A similar sermon was screened on TV1, says one viewer.
1239: Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim has asked police to be at all churches. “Police will deploy officers and are cooperating with us,” a church lawyer informs me.
Meanwhile, the FRU have been spotted in Kelana Jaya heading for the Federal Highway, according to an eye-witness.
1237: “I think (what has happened) is very, very unfortunate. This is exactly what we do not want to happen,” says Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, deputy president of Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM).
“As good religious people, we know that each religion stresses tolerance and respect for one another’s practices. We should let the court process go on but at the same time we should calm our people, Muslims and non-Muslims, to ensure we always act in the interests of all and the country.”
“I think the word ‘Allah’ is something which is mulia, to be respected by all. Allah represents God for all. In other words, the use of the phrase should be done in a tactful and respectful manner without any bad intent.”
1152: An attempted attack at the Life Chapel in Section 17. A molotov cocktail again. No real damage. “It’s the same modus operandi,” says Rev Hermen Shastri, the General Secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia. “There is a pattern.”
Church reps want the police to station personnel at all churches in the capital, whether Catholic or Protestant.
Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim is with a church lawyer at the Assumption Church.
1127: Some 21 police personnel along with a forensics team are at the Assumption Church along Jalan Templar to inspect the failed arson attack. They have assured church reps that there would be more police patrols around churches.
Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim is said to be on the way to visit the church.

The Metro Tabernacle Church after the arson attack - Photo via iron
1000: Woke up this morning to text messages on the fire-bombing at the Metro Tabernacle Church in Desa Melawati and the failed kerosene attack on the Assumption Church in Jalan Templar.
The world of Twitter is abuzz with messages expressing outrage.
This could be a long day. A few elements are obviously out there bent on stirring trouble. It is important for political and religious leaders from across the spectrum to condemn such attacks. Thus far, the political leadership of this country on this issue has not been inspiring, to put it mildly.
I am sure Malaysians of all spiritual faiths and those of goodwill will abhor attacks on any place of worship.
In the face of some trepidation ahead of expected protests, let’s look to the young for some hope for the future. This is an excerpt from a Malaysiakini report:
In a show of solidarity, Muslim and Christian students in Universiti Malaya (yesterday) came out with a consensus over the ‘Allah’ row.
In a statement, PMIUM (UM Association of Muslim Students) and PKVUM (UM Varsity Christian’s Association), the umbrella organisations that represent students of the respective religions, said the two groups had reached an understanding over the matter.
PMIUM president Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin and PKVUM president Benjamin Ong both signed the statement listing down the guidelines that they have agreed upon:
- That dialogue and discourse is the best and respectable way to handle the issue.
- That proper education to the adherents of the different faiths must be given in order to ensure the proper understanding of tenets of each religion.
- The legal system is not the only proper way to solve the issue, especially when it is open to manipulation by certain parties.
- Religious institutions and leaders must take the proactive step of meeting and engaging in discourse in order to promote greater understanding among the different faiths.
They reminded all parties not to manipulate the issue and condemned those who use it to provoke public sentiments.
The public must use discretion and proper education to avoid prejudice towards the followers of other religion.

I am looking at two situations:
a. Selangor state anthem, which reads:
Duli Yang Maha Mulia
Selamat di atas takhta
Allah lanjutkan usia Tuanku
Rakyat mohon restu bawah Duli Tuanku
Bahagia selama-lamanya
Aman dan sentosa
Duli Yang Maha Mulia
b. Baca doa in public events and in Sekolah Kebangsaan.
In both instances above, the non-Muslims have accepted the fact that Allah is used and in the case of 1 above, non-Muslims also sing the state anthem. I remember doing that in primary school in K.L when the city was still under Selangor.
The scenario now seems to be:
a. Whatever UMNO introduces, non-Muslims must accept without questioning, including mentioning of the word ‘Allah’. There should be no cause for alarm among the non-Muslims and they should not raise any concerns.
b. But when the Catholics in Malaysia want to use the word in Bahasa Malaysia communication specifically for its Church goers only, UMNO wants to deter such action.
Since when did UMNO take on the role of interfering in the activities of a Church?
Does this not point out to just one fact – UMNO never tolerates any action by those in Malaysia, when it does not match UMNO’s crude agenda.
If this is not the snobbish and arrogant ‘ketuanan’ that is being forced down the throat of non-Muslims, what else can we call this?

Please don’t attempt to move this issue out of the courts and into the religious domain. Every diminution of the domain of the Constitution is a loss for all Malaysians. A greater role for religious bodies to make decisions on matters which should be under the protection of the Constitution is obviously a terrible temptation, but would be a terribly retrograde step. If you care for your religions and for your country, you must reject the temptation to help those whose purposes are best served by weakening the Constitution and the law.

This has caused hatred and jealousy amongst people. It is very dangerous situation. My opinion is – keep this issue closed. One person unhappy will bring big havoc in issue related to religion.
What we ought to do now is to tolerate. We should opt to live a devote life rather than a martyr. Obedient life is better sacrificial life. God will no be bullied because He is with holding His vengeance until the judgment day arrive.
Do not use logic or laws. It can not be resolved through logic or laws But can be resolved through tolerating.
All must close rank now.

To all Christians, Catholics and the rest, this is the time to proof who has a better head that can think rationally, its just a building (that we call Church).
Remember what the Taleban did to the Bamiyan statues in Afganistan, do not take tit-for-tat action(s).
The real winner will prevail.
Keep your (correct one) head thinking, not your emotions.
God Bless Malaysia.

Previously we were bombarded with propaganda by BN, UMNO, MIC, MCA, Gerakan, PPP etc that PAS was a religious extremist party & DAP a racialitic party that scare many non muslim to vote BN and reject PAS, DAP & PR…. Now we know that PAS & DAP is not and UMNO is.
Now we have seen through the lies of BN & UMNO especially Najib and their … MIC, MCA, & Gerakan and knows that UMNO is (allegedly) instigating the current issue and THAT IT IS a religious extremist party AS EXPOSED BY RAZALEIGH. Najib telling muslim that they can protest INSTEAD OF ASKING THEM TO CALM DOWN OR WAIT FOR THE COURT APPEAL…is this the PM you still want.
When PR held their protest whether outdoor or indoor, they were either arrested or manhandled by the police. THIS IS THE 1MALAYSIA HE IS PROMOTING – DOUBLE STANDARD…
WE MUST RESOLVE ONCE AND FOR ALL TO KICK OUT UMNO & BN IN THE GE AFTER MORE THAN 52 YEARS OF UMNO CORRUPTIBLE & RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM

Usual modus operandi of using Racial and Religious divisive to distract the Rakyat from the ruling elites’ plunders.
Unfortunately, many Rakyat haven’t woken up and unable to differentiate which party is a religious extremist & racialist party!
Many have and will sell their vote for pittances!

Stop playing politics and the kind of propaganda being churned out by Pakatan cheerleaders and cybertroopers seems to strengthen accusations that this was something that (appeared) planned by PR to sabotage Najib and BN/UMNO.
It would be intrestesting to see when the culprits are caught by the police. It would be even more intresting if they are exposed as Pakatan’s supporters.

Gerakan K,
So it was planned by PR but what is the PM doing to diffuse the situation. Instead of trying to calm the situation, he said that these people has the right to demonstrate. Isn`t this going to aggravate the situation. Now see what happen….

Hi All,
The main purpose that the muslims want to avoid using Name of Allah b’coz they really need to make sure that the name of Allah is not for foolish or miss used. It gonna be the same if other religion’s god name played or miss used by other people. Sure the same situation gonna be happend rite?
So, for your example that u’ll gave b4, we as muslims already now that Name of Allah used by good manner. That’s the only reasob why its allowed to be used for public.
Hope all of my Malaysia Friends will understand the true situation…

This is my theory.
The firebombing of churches in KL/PJ had altered the situation in that it had gone over the brim instead of just at the brim if UMNO strategists were to have it to maximise the advantage they get over Muslim leaders in PR.
That is probably the reason why Hishamuddin was putting on the brakes at the last minute during a press conference yesterday. His position apparently changed.
Public opinion after the torching of the Metro Tabernacle Assembly of God early this morning swarmed those strategists as they beat a hasty retreat.
Instead of expecting crowds in excess of several thousands literally to shore up support for UMNO, only a handful turned up for the demonstrations after the Friday service today.
I feel the torching of a church jerked many to reality because Malaysians are basically peace loving folks with a job and a home to return to every day.
This is not Pakistan, Somalia nor Afganistan.
This is Malaysia, truly Asia.
Please continue to pray for God’s intervention in this.

Bad things has to happen before the good things come. With all these happenings created by Umno, I see a light at the end of the tunnel. Malaysia is paving for a change for the better. BN is now … infected… They (do not think) of the consequences because they know they are going to die anyway. So do or don’t do, also die. Malaysians, be patient and get ready for the good times rolling in soon.

Luckily, the blockbuster of a protest that was highly anticipated in view of all the buildups by the MSM, TVs, by our leaders and UMNO, has turned out to be an absolute failure blowing …. on their faces!
Once again, thank you all our fair thinking Malaysian brothers and sisters. No to racial politics, goodbye to UMNO, MCA, MIC and Gerakan and the likes. Effectively, it means goodbye Bolts and Nuts! Cheers bro!

MUET, I understand fully of what you said…
But, really God is so Great, Omnipotent, He does not need us to defend HIM nor protect HIM simply because He is God, the Great I AM.
Who are we, the mere mortals to protect HIM? Why do we need to protect HIM?
Do you really think God need us to protect HIM?
To those who does not revere the name of God, that is the business between that person and God alone.
Dont you believe one fine day, we all will be judged by God?
I have heard a lot of jokes made on Jesus Christ. Dont tell me I have to slap them…
If we are really concern, i think the most appropriate thing to do is, offer a prayer for them, i.e. God, please forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.
Agree, MUET?

I fully agree with Yang, kick BN out in the coming general election… once and for all… do yourself a favour…
Did i hear wrongly, Najib said he cannot stop them from protesting??? But when PR wants to call for a protest, trucks, FRU, Police, teargas are all ready to stop them…
But very sad, a lot of non Malays, in particular those Sabahans and Sarawakians they are still preferred to be fooled by Mr Najib and Pairin’s Party, MCA,Gerakan, MIC, etc..
If I can, i will urge the Catholic church to drop he usage of “Allah” even though i was told by my Catholic friend that Catholics have been using Allah in the prayer book since 1900.
This is purely to stop UMNO from taking the opportunity to politicise it – to stir the emotion of the Malays hoping to regain their support in the next GE.
And, also, I simply belive we dont fight over God’s matters because HE is God, He does not need us to protect nor to defend HIM, as I believe and trust in His sovereignty. Agree?

Congratulations! The unsuccessful protest planned and hyped by UMNO had been a dismal failure, and limited to sporadic attacks at churches by a few thugs! Despite the absence of road blocks to deter protesters from entering the Federal Capital, the turnout at these protests were at best, dismal!
Once again thank you to our Malay brothers and sisters, who once again showed their maturity by staying out of a protest which they realized are organized to satisfy the interests of a few! Thank Allah, our Malay brothers and sisters are now not that gullible anymore! Malaysia certainly have a chance as the Malays today, are more concerned with bread and butter issues, unlike previously! Once again thank you PAS and Keadilan, for playing your part to ask your supporters not to participate in the protest, at the same time employing your people at mosques to advise fellow Malays not to get involve in the protest and reasoning to them the burning of churches and places of worship is against Islam! Malaysians thank you for your responsibility to promote peace and harmony in the country. We surely have a chance by the look of things! Despite the hype and controversy that mired the leaders, past and present, the planned mammoth protest did not materialized the way we anticipated!
What is next? The next and best way is for all Malaysians to say a big no to racial politics! Truly, we will gel into one wonderful and successful anak bangsa Malaysia, able to compete against the best in the world, not against each other! To the UMNO regime, we wish to say, please do not poiticized the matter of religion and race! Those days are over, as an overwhelming numbers of Malays had moved out of the kampungs and migrated to the city. The matter of food and shelter, good Governance, better education, corruption are of immediate concern to them. They have moved out and have advanced with time, and if well trained and led, will be able to compete competitively against our Singapore counterparts.
Once again, thank you our Malay brothers and sisters, thank you PAS, thank you Keadilan, and thank you all Malaysians for showing that we are of far superior materials than to be used for such useless protests and a waste of our precious time, which will be better spend with our families or to advance our careers! Thank you 1Rakyat untuk Malaysia!

The writing was on the wall during the last few days when the Mass media reported that both home minister and prime minister said it is okay or something to that effect for Muslims to hold protest on the Allah issue. It doesn’t matter if they said it or not, this was already conveyed by the newspapers and it is like giving the green light and taking sides. When there is a federal gormen, it is a gormen for all, to take sides is wrong.
But then again thank Allah that the people are more level headed now in comparison to say 40 years ago when such an incident would have resulted in utter destruction and misfortune. Too bad for the planners of this heinous act and possibly a larger and greater motif and plan, IT DIDN’T WORK. LIKE THEY SAY; SAME …, DIFFERENT PLACE DIFFERENT TIME, we should count our blessings that it is a different time and most true Malaysians are more matured and responsible now and refrain from such despicable acts.
I think enough of desecration of Allah’s name through these despicable acts, time to stop now. UNITE MALAYSIANS, SAY NO TO MADNESS AND VIOLENCE.

To MuET,
I am a Catholic, and I do believe and love God.
If I talk to an Atheist who doesn’t believe in the existence of God, please tell me what should I do to him?
Burn down his house?
But before I do that, I ask myself these questions:
What God wants me to do?
Is burning down the houses of people who do not believe in God the way God wants me to do?
What I am telling you, MuET, is about me and God.
Maybe it is different from others and God.
Maybe “their God” (no offense) wants them to burn down the houses of their “enemies”.
Maybe to them its the right thing to do.
I don’t know, and I won’t even begin to pretend to know anything.
All I know is, we all die one day, and at that time, God will do to us according to what we do to others.

Let the police do their job as these are criminal acts, localised and nothing to do with LGE.
LGE will have his day, if he is reluctant to restore the glory of Botanical Gardens, Pisa to Penangnites!
Until the glory and beauty of the Botanical Gardens and Pisa are restored, largely damaged by BN with their Federal projects, and exploited to the hilt by Gerakan citizen journalists, he should not talk too much on PICC. Where there is a will there is a way. We are a state and a leading one in Malaysia, we do not want to have our facilities left to rot, unattended, like what Bolts and Nuts had been doing to all the sports facilities in Bukit Jalil. Put back the beauty into Botanical Gardens and upgrade PISA before PICC. I will not hesitate to protest with you, if you organized one if basic amenities are not attended to and embarking on the PICC. It is like buying a new Benz, when the roofs of the house is leaking! Put your priorities right, LGE!
Cheers Bro!

… BN UMNO government stood by while the corruptible and criminal activities of the counry continues unabated. One of the greatest sin is when this … PM told the people that we cannot stop such protest but he will do anything to stop the opposition protest. Remember the reporter hauled under ISA, or wearing black shirt and candle virgil or DAP ceramah showing the footage of the assembly sitting or Teoh Beng Hock and latest Ean Yong.
Worse still (the BN was involved in) enticing 3 Adun on corruptible activities now still pending in court. These and many more are the accusation which are a fact and the truth……
LGE stood up to a malay girl and goes to jail while armed criminal activities is under the purview of the police unless you are accusing LGE has a stake in these activities. At least he is more honest than Najib…..

Gerakan K,
The fact is your beloved PM is more rhetoric than being able to lead! Such a huge letdown! Really, unforgivable, his pranks and plots, are exactly like you, Gerakan K. Really, he has created the biggest blunder of his political career…
… no one wanted to participate (in the protest) despite the huge amount of publicity given through the TV stations, MSM and whatever medias at their disposal. Look at the pathetic picture of 4 demonstrators at the National Mosque holding the banner? The total absence of support at the Sunway Pyramid, venue where there is to be another protest? 20 supporters at Kampung Baru mosque?
This is the kind of response you get when the protest intention is questionable! No Malaysians of sane mind wants to get into stupid protests, scripted, directed and starred by thugs. Yesterday, marked the beginning of a new dawn for Malaysia. A dawn where racism is shown the door out of Malaysia, hopefully eternally.
The next step is to vote out such people in very huge numbers to ensure their political demise eternally come the next GE! I am sure Gerakan K will fulfill your duty to the nation too.
Cheers Bro.

When you alleged the criminal activities in Penang it is irrelevant to the topic and I am just rebutting to your irrelevant comment. What I have mentioned about your PM is the facts and the truth. In fact Anil deleted out one item which is even more truer and I don`t blame him for that. Yes plenty of criminal activities not just in Penang but the whole country but why didn`t you point that to the PM. After all he did entice 2 adun on corruptible charges isn`t it. Or the not allowed to mention murder of which he is implicated. There are still many many more.. Before you start accusing, tell me which criminal activities that LGE was implicated…????…

It saddens me that the very people who are supposed to govern the nation WELL has let us down. This means they just cannot lead. We have lost so much as a nation in the process!
To address this until the next general election (situation here is critical that any Devout Catholics and right thinking individuals will agree this warrants GE be held in a matter of months), and, as Catholics who should not appear to be confrontational, lets drop this fight over the use of the word “Allah”. This does not mean we have lost the battle, as the Lord knows our predicament, but what is expected of us really – is to forgive and move on.
However, we should claim our other rights; for instance, cemetry plots to undertake a burial for practising Catholics according to what is required of our faith. This is scarce especially in KL and PJ, and other states I am sure. Cheras cemetry is bursting at its seams.
Will we be turned down, is no longer an issue.
Over the last five decades, or since independence, time and time again it has proven that the people have not matured.
We can blame the ills on education, politicians, etc, but it is too late isn’t it?
I reiterate we have lost so much and we will continue to loose more, if we the citizens are not wise with our decisions.
May the Lord Protect Malaysia!

Respects are to be earned and not to be forced! Good governance garners respect whereas bad governance deserves hatred!
Another proof that the PR Government with the support of the Rakyat can govern on its own.
But, I am with Gerakan K, that all basic amenities need to be looked into first, fully restored to its former glory before embarking on PICC. While Gerakan K, hopes that the Gerakan citizen journalists will capitalize on the issues, it is my sincere wish that LGE and the PR Government, takes proactive steps to immediately clear up and clean up the mess at botanical garden, and to repair wherever needed at PISA for the safe and continued usage of the said facilities for Penangnites. Once again a very honest comment to LGE, please look into the mess in Botanical Gardens, deliberately created by the Bolts and Nuts, to ensure there is continued issues for the opposition in Penang to harp on, and the Botanical Gardens, I had mentioned many times is too sentimental to generations of Penangnites! A non issue can become a real issue, if correctly exploited. Unlike UMNO’s wrong exploitation of the “Allah” issue, due to bad strategising without taking into the consideration that the Rakyat’s stomachs are hungry! Should have made Gerakan K, their strategist, I am sure Gerakan K will not fail.
Cheers Bro
