Ku Li tells 1,000-strong crowd he is going for top post after Mahathir quits Umno

5.30pm - Ku Li has addressed a crowd of over 1,000 people at the ballroom of another hotel in Alor Star. Commenting on Dr Mahathir’s shock decision to quit, he said that the former premier had wanted to send a strong message to Umno.

Tengku Razeleigh also said he would be challenging for the top post in the party. He added that the quota system for nominations should be abolished. And he stressed that a more democratic culture is needed in Umno.

One political analyst at the scene told me he now believes that Mahathir will be backing Razaleigh in the latter’s bid for the top post.

Ironically, it was Mahathir who introduced the nomination quota system to ward off further challenges from Razaleigh after he narrowly squeezed through in the 1987 Umno election.

2.28pm - Tengku Razaleigh is expected to address a gathering in Alor Star this afternoon. It comes hot on the heels of Mahathir’s shock announcement here earlier today, in front of a crowd of around 2,000, that he is quitting Umno.

  2. perhaps this is good for the country and peace shall now prevail with dr m resignation…..maybe not as we know he is a mamak will be very revengeful…….time to use ISA on him

  3. It’s time for a change. I think no one is indispensable. Hence, with or without UMNO, I think this is the wayang kulit. Maybe it’s time for Anwar to court Badawi…

  4. This man Mahatir with a never ending sandiwara, not only that he resign, he wanted all the UMNO member follow suit.
Then he will tell the whole world that he is the most powerful UMNO leader.
Abddullah should take his challange to charge him in court.
His family is very desperate now, seeing that the DOOR TO SUNGAI BULOH IS OPEN FOR HIM. I hope this will be his last wish before he die get the taste of ISA for himself.

  5. As for Ku Li dont make yourself like a fool, remember Matahir has made you his “kuli” onetime.People of Malaysia have very high respect for, so please dont join hand with this desperate man.”ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY”

  6. Firaun will never back the man who plotted to bring him down.

And, there wil be no peace.

Firaun’s intention is to ‘Expunge’ the RCI findings and APaul cannot assist him this time around. Ther’s too much at stake as one thing might lead to another and there might be a new RCI into Firaun and his family wealth.

So, you’ll see UMNO Millenium Baru formed with him as Chairman and Muk as Numero Unero CEO. Botox Lips, M2M and all the rejects and misfits will rush in where angels fear to tread.

The end will not come quickly. It will be a long drawn out affair unless Firaun is arrested under ISA and Sedition Laws. His comments about Malays being possibly forced to live in the forests of IRD if land is sold to s’pore can certainly be interpreted as fomenting unrest and economic sabotage.

These are the best of times; These are the worst of times.

  9. The eventual winner of UMNO presidency will probably end up the Opposition Leader in Parliament. So what the great deal? The battle for UMNO’s top post will be a non-event in December.

  10. Dear Anil:

We all know Mahathir. But he cannot run away from the law which will chase him until his last day.

He is already 83 and he just had another heart surgery.
I do not know how he gets his strength and energy.

HE IS A GREAT ACTOR - better than Charlie Chaplin. You remember how he cried in Parliament and a few UMNO MPs
ran to him thinking that he is going to collapse!

You must read yesterday’s NST where Karpal Singh has said:

“Veteran lawyer Karpal Singh called on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to identify the judges who had lobbied him for promotions.

If not, the DAP chairman said innocent judges could be “tainted by the same brush”.

“It is in the public interest for Dr Mahathir to identify the judges without further delay. On the other hand, the accused judges should be given the opportunity to clear their names,” Karpal said.

He said Dr Mahathir should not wait to be charged in court. “He must be prepared to name the judges now.”

On Saturday, the former prime minister said he was prepared to face charges arising out of the findings of the royal commission into the Lingam video clip, in the course of which he would reveal that judges had lobbied for promotions.

“This is a very serious implication and the said judges should be investigated.

“If the lobbying is true, it is a very serious form of misconduct that can even merit the removal of the judges from office,” he said.

Karpal, the MP for Bukit Gelugor, said he was surprised that Dr Mahathir did not seem to know that lobbying by the judges was a serious matter.

“Under the federal constitution’s doctrine of separation of powers, judges who lobby should be subjected to a tribunal set up by the king to determine if they are guilty of misconduct.

“It does not matter if the judges are still in service or retired,” he said.

Dr Mahathir had said he would disclose in court what really went on behind the scenes at the time of the telephone conversation in the video clip.

However, he denied he had given in to lobbying.

The royal commission has recommended that Dr Mahathir, lawyer Datuk V.K. Lingam, former chief justices Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim and Tun Eusoff Chin, tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan and former tourism minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor be investigated for conspiring to rig judicial appointments and promotions.

On Friday, the cabinet directed the attorney-general to order the investigations.

Karpal also said parties who felt aggrieved by court decisions involving the personalities mentioned by the commission should apply for a review of their cases.

He said exceptional circumstances had to be established before the Federal Court could revise its earlier decisions.

“In the past, decisions of the Federal Court were deemed to be final.

“Only after 2000, following a civil case, did the Federal Court rule that it did have powers to review its own decisions under Rule 137, in the interest of justice,” he said.

(Rule 137 of the Federal Court Act 1994 states that the court has the power to hear any application or to make any order as may be necessary to prevent an injustice or to prevent an abuse of the process of the court.)

Karpal said the commission’s findings only amounted to recommendations.

“It is premature to embark on an open review of judgments given by the implicated judges, as only after prosecution and conviction can there be grounds for a review,” he said.

Unlike other cases of appeals in lower courts, there is no time limit for an application for a review.

Several cases heard by the judges cited in the commission report could now become eligible for review.

The report confirms something long-known among legal circles, and even the layman, that all is not well with the judiciary. It not only says there was “interference and manipulation” in the appointment and promotion of judges, it adds that there was “misbehaviour” on the part of some, including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

It adds: “This kind of misbehaviour is so unprecedented that were it not for the release of the video clip it may never have come to light.” The report says there is cause to investigate some of those named. This includes Dr Mahathir, former chief justices Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim and Tun Mohd Eusoff Chin, former minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Lingam, who has made lines such as “it sounds like me and looks like me” and “pom, pom, pom” household words.

Saying the selection process of judges is somewhat flawed, the report suggests that the power to recommend the appointment and promotion of judges be vested in a judicial appointments commission. The report is bound to have wide ramifications, not least for the cases heard by Ahmad Fairuz and Eusoff.

While the government should be lauded for making the report public and directing investigations against those named, it must realise that the public will be watching how fast, and how far, it moves. Importantly, the report should spur the government’s avowed plan to institute judicial reforms.

The public, for its part, should understand that those named in the commissions’s report are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. As the report counsels, it is one thing to determine in a commission that some misbehaviour has taken place but quite another for the authorities to obtain relevant and admissible evidence from witnesses prepared to testify in a court of law.

Yes, the work of the commission is over. But the real work is only beginning.

Now the A.G. must act, but will he?
Mahathir has to face the law

  11. mahathir is trying to fan the issue so that he can get all the publicity. We, who are not in UMNO should not help him to fan the flame. From now on we should be more restrain in our response and reaction to what he says and does.

Don’t help him, don’t fall into his trap. Just stand aside and watch!

  12. if seditious act is applied, 1 million malaysians will go to jail including former p ministers

  13. I often wonder whether Star Wars is a fictional account of our political scenario, albeit written years ago. Doesn’t Kuli remind you of Yoda, but on the wrong side of the force?

  14. Just stand aside and watch the show unfolding. See the endless shadow play of the directionless characters.

mahathir is laughing in his heart at the gutless, spineless AAB. When they meet in Japan he will be wearing the despicable smile. After the meeting he will be pouring scorn at malleable AAB.

Did any earth shaterring event occur after he resigned? It is already 2 days - it must disappoint him to no end. He thought there will be an exodus, so the majority of the people is right, mahathirism is dead.

He knew that he and AAB will be going to Japan. He made the move because he knows the spineless lot will ask to meet him there. Now, he will have even more scorn and disrespect for this lot.

As to najid, what else can you expect from him. Isn’t this his normal behavior. Hadn’t he stood with Ku Li and Musa Hitan till the last minute and then switched to mahathir’s side. Remember? Remember?

…The people who voted PRakyat have been sold out by PAS, Nik Aziz and also by PKR and Azizah. Now PAS is talking about “malay interest’ and Nik Aziz and Azizah are offering mahathir to join them. ‘The door is wide open to him’ …..ha!

  15. Finally he came out from UMNO.It really open doors to Ku Li and Anwar. A different set of politics game will be played from now onwards.
