The real deal: Perak Mentri Besar Nizar Jamaluddin below the Democracy Tree

So the High Court has ruled that Nizar is the rightful MB and Zambry and his exco members are to vacate their posts with immediate effect.

Justice Abdul Aziz Abd Rahim ruled that a Mentri Besar can only be dismissed by a vote of no confidence.

This is a brave verdict by a courageous judge.

Former Supreme Court Judge Azmi Kamaruddin passed away last night at the age of 75.

He will forever be remembered for standing up, along with his colleagues, in defence of the Judiciary when its independence was under severe assault in 1988 during the Mahathir administration.

Azmi was one of five Supreme Court Judges – the others were George Seah, Wan Hamzah Mohd Salleh, the late Eusoffe Abdolcadeer and the late Wan Suleiman Pawanteh – who tried to stop the removal of Tun Salleh Abas, who had been suspended as Lord President.

These five shone like a beacon of justice at a time when the judiciary was shrouded in darkness.

Just got news that Irene Fernandez has been finally acquitted after a 13-year court battle on a charge of publishing false news about the ill-treatment and poor living conditions of migrant workers in a detention centre. The High Court judge who made the decision is Mohamad Apandi Ali.

Fernandez is a staunch human rights activist and is the director and co-founder of Tenaganita, a Malaysian NGO that promotes the rights and welfare of migrant and agricultural workers.
