I spoke to a couple of people on Tenang to find out what they thought of the way the by-election campaign was going.

Before that, a little poll:

Who will win the Tenang by-election?

  • BN - reduced majority (46%, 253 Votes)
  • Pas (40%, 220 Votes)
  • BN - larger majority (9%, 50 Votes)
  • Don't know (5%, 30 Votes)

Total Voters: 553

The first, a political scientist now visiting Tenang, told me that it’s not looking great for Pas there. Another political analyst accompanying him, however, chipped in, “But it’s not all that bad either for Pas.”

The BN looks solid especially in the Felda areas where a sizeable bloc of voters reside and have profited in recent times, said the political scientist. Continue reading »

2011 is shaping up to be a year full of elections: two or three by-elections, the Sarawak state election (could be in April) and perhaps a general election.

(MStar quoted the Election Commission chief as saying that the Merlimau (Melaka) state seat rep from Umno had passed away at 2.30pm. But at 4.29pm, the Malaysian Insider corrected its earlier twitter flash of his death as follows: “Merlimau rep Mohd Hidhir on life support, Malacca Umno confirms & denies EC report of his death.” Finally, just before 9.00pm another news flash reported that Umno had confirmed that the rep had passed away.)

Listen to Johor Education Department director Markom Giran caught on video urging teachers/counsellors to work for a victory for the “government” in the Tenang by-election.

Among other things, he urges them to colour-code areas according to the degree of support for the BN (blue) on the one hand, to hardcore support for the opposition (green), on the other. Attention would be focussed on grey areas. Counsellors were also urged to talk to the pupils’ parents and visit their homes as part of this effort. Continue reading »
