What none of you seem to grasp is that monorail is perfectly feasible. There is enough space, and proper planning can avoid irking Heritage lovers.

Trams simply will not work in Penang. There is no space already, yet you want to add trams. Forget it.

First, we need to rescue our bus system. Double deckers are needed, esp on the RapidPG 200 and 300 series lines. We need higher frequencies (at least every 15 min, preferably every 10) and better bus interchanges.

Secondly, we need better ticketing. Intoduce Travelcards and make Touch 'n' Go standard, like ez-link in Singapore.

THEN, we can start building the monorail to provide our desperately needed arteries.

Buses first, then the monorail. Forget trams, forget an underground.

correction :
But not getting approval yet for the PORR has caused the Paragon to create really bad traffic flow when it's finished. Gurney Drive was never designed for this density of traffic. Gurney Plaza creates this problem 4 days in a week. The PORR, if approved, would have eased the traffic when they build the future extension to Gurney Drive. The previous Penang Goverment, as we know, seems short-sighted.

Oh, and don't just think that Penang Island has only 700,000 people for now. If the infrastructure is laid down now, the population will increase exponentially. With good public transportation, businesses will improve. Anyway, with oil prices going up and up, Penang people will have to depend on public transport soon. What better time than to prepare for it now.
Don't think like the previous Penang Government who had no vision. They beautified Campbell Street with walkways and lighting for our shopping pleasure. That cost Penang people a lot of money. But the Rent Control Act expired a year after that. Now Campbell Street is full of empty shops.
Or, another example, the previous Govt allowed Hunzaland to build the Paragon at Gurney Drive. But not getting approval yet for the PORR has caused the Paragon seems short-sighted.
And, as we all know, PORR was never going to happen.
I hope you guys and girls who post comments here can get together to have coffee and discuss this. We can bring our proposal to LGE to look into.

Cheers!

Tram is more a tourist attraction and for some getting around this ghost town of Georgetown. But for moving masses of people, you need something heavy duty that will last a long time. Monorail can only be built above the streets. Ugly! Trams can only move people at road level, that is, if the cars, buses, and bikes obey traffic laws. But then, this is Penang, a lawless town. Penang road users remind me of Vietnam traffic. And they drive like people of this Third World country.
The only place to build is underground. Totally free to build there cos no one's used it yet. Yes, it will cost a lot, but better to consider building that now before costs rise again. It's already gone up once while we were talking about it. In 15 years time, the price will be so out of reach. The Federal Govt has the money. Claim it now before they start sending more astronauts, or build some longest, biggest, tallest monument to get into the Guiness World Records again.

A smaal island of Penang (not like Singapore) needs tram not monorail or subway.

If you build subway for Penang, the company who manage this subway will go bankrupt. If you build monorail for Penang, World Heritage would take out Penang.

Look at world class cities not developing or third world cities like Hanoi.

World top 30 cities like Melbourne has a good network of tarm service. Melbourne is world most liveable city in the world: http://www.citymayors.com/features/quality_survey.html

The benefits of tram are a lot:

1. Tram will eventually replace bus plying in inner city of Georgetown.

2. Tram is a new tourist product.

3. Tram is complying with World Heritage City Listing.

4. Cost of building tram network is very much lower than monorail. Hence lower cost of commuter ticket. Why go for billion Ringgit monorail?

5. Tram is very fast to deploy. You could get a tram network by end of this year.

6. Tram could be a government project because it is a low cost project but it could solve transport problems like those in Melbourne city.

7. Tram could integrate with present expansion project of Penang Bridge if Penant government starts it now.

Guys,
I beg to differ. Monorail and PORR will be required, for better people/transport movement, but perhaps not now. Definately 15 years down the road, we need both and will live to regret if not planned today. I stayed in Singapore for more than 15 years. I was told that Singaporean was planning for their Changi 3rd terminal 20 years ago whaen I first moved there to do my tertiary. when there need is there and the timing is right, meaning hard time ahead for contruction, Singapore goverment will roll out these infra projects to re-start the economy engine at a cheaper rate - as every contractor is hungry.

MRT in Singapore has been planned even longer. Just see how they linked up the towns underground without affecting the foundation. It is not by chance - they have good town planning first and the MRT plan will come at the same time. Not like KL ones, so many cronies that want a piece of eveyy project - so many different lines that eventually can not integrates - the passangers haave to get out of statios to go to another line - pathetic planning. Oh! before I forget, Singapore town planners are mostly Malaysian - check it out yourself.

BAck to Penang, (I am from Pg as well. We should have satalite towns first - self sufficient and self sustainable township so as to minimise people movements. PEople in Bayan Baru need not go to Gurney, Penang road to do their shoping - they can do it in B.Baru. Likewise for offices. Must have 20 years plan to change the landscape and density of population. MRT/Monorail route will be mapped according to township masterplpan.

We complain too much - I see it as throwing spanners into the works - like the Bukit BEndera projects - it may be good for tourism. AS it was complained by Oppositions, it was KIV/killed off. See what we have now in Penang for tourists??? WTell me, those who oppose, when was the last time you went up to Penang Hill. For me, the long queue has already deterred me from thinking of it. Bottom line, we can still develop Penang Hill and fulfil all the Shabat Alam and Enviromentalist strict requiements.... unless you want to be cavemen and stay in the Lubang or tunnel/underground.

I suggest that some one, instead of hust complaining, list out constructive suggestion for the new goverment to move ahead.

Bring back the glory of Penang - let's do it together - the Penang way. Cheers.

Guys,
I beg to differ. Monorail and PORR will be required, for better people/transport movement, but perhaps not now. Definately 15 years down the road, we need both and will live to regret if not planned today. I stayed in Singapore for more than 15 years. I was told that Singaporean was planning for their Changi 3rd terminal 20 years ago whaen I first moved there to do my tertiary. when there need is there and the timing is right, meaning hard time ahead for contruction, Singapore goverment will roll out these infra projects to re-start the economy engine at a cheaper rate – as every contractor is hungry.

MRT in Singapore has been planned even longer. Just see how they linked up the towns underground without affecting the foundation. It is not by chance – they have good town planning first and the MRT plan will come at the same time. Not like KL ones, so many cronies that want a piece of eveyy project – so many different lines that eventually can not integrates – the passangers haave to get out of statios to go to another line – pathetic planning. Oh! before I forget, Singapore town planners are mostly Malaysian – check it out yourself.

BAck to Penang, (I am from Pg as well. We should have satalite towns first – self sufficient and self sustainable township so as to minimise people movements. PEople in Bayan Baru need not go to Gurney, Penang road to do their shoping – they can do it in B.Baru. Likewise for offices. Must have 20 years plan to change the landscape and density of population. MRT/Monorail route will be mapped according to township masterplpan.

We complain too much – I see it as throwing spanners into the works – like the Bukit BEndera projects – it may be good for tourism. AS it was complained by Oppositions, it was KIV/killed off. See what we have now in Penang for tourists??? WTell me, those who oppose, when was the last time you went up to Penang Hill. For me, the long queue has already deterred me from thinking of it. Bottom line, we can still develop Penang Hill and fulfil all the Shabat Alam and Enviromentalist strict requiements…. unless you want to be cavemen and stay in the Lubang or tunnel/underground.

I suggest that some one, instead of hust complaining, list out constructive suggestion for the new goverment to move ahead.

Bring back the glory of Penang – let’s do it together – the Penang way. Cheers.

Anil,
Penang needs the Monorail, the Second Bridge and the PORR like a serious Gash (not just a wee hole) in the head !!!!
Total cost of all these 3 so-called projects is (3.1 + 4.7 + 1.1) a minimum of 8.9 BILLION ringgits as of today and would any one dare to take a wager that the figure will bloat to at least a further 30% or 2.7 billion more (if no other grubby fingers are stuck into these delicious pies).
The situation in Penang can be handled at a small percentage of this insane figure by the following programs being taken.
1. Monorail - Replace that as you mentioned with a complete network of Trams - if possible, trams designed like the trams of old that ran around Penang as recently as the 1950s - and we have another attraction for Tourist visitors to Penang to enjoy and relieve the heritage city. In fact, the Rapid bus does not fit into the Penang (Georgetown) scene as they are quite big and do cause a fair bit of traffic problems especially when the drivers chose to stop at the middle of the road when they pick up or drop passengers. Buses should operate from a few select points such as from Glugor (for passengers to Relau, Sg Nibong, Bayan Lepas, Teluk Kumbar and beyond, from Ayer Itam to Balik Pulau and villages on the west coast, from Bagan Jermal to Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringgi and beyond. With proper planning and scheduling of the transport system, Penang can avoid wasting 4.2 Billion (Monorail 3.1b + PORR(dah) 1.1b).
As for the 2nd Bridge - upgrade the present bridge - add on a passenger walkalator from the Mainland to the Penang side (it will cost a pittance as compared to the 2nd bridge) - just ensure that public transport (as mentioned previously is available) and we would have a very economical people mover. By installing the walkalator on an extension on the bridge - proper engineering will I am sure ensure that this can be be built with the safety of passengers in mind. How to recover cost - charge say Rm 1 ringgits per person - I way - I know I would be happy to pay for that convenience.
With a good in-city public transport system to serve the public on Penang Island and an equally dependent one on the mainland, many travelers from mainland Penang will be happy to leave their cars on the mainland while they holiday on the island.
As a further service to the public, Penang Govt should look into the possibility of issuing taxi licenses (sorry, LGE you and your guys will have to look up the law on this) to Penang taxi drivers on condition that they use meters and do not fleece passengers. The current system of giving licenses to 'vested interest cronies' who then charge taxi drivers very exhorbitant rentals to taxi drivers is the cause of the problems that these drivers face and force drivers to pass on the costs to passengers. Be fair to these guys and I am sure that Penang will not have further problems with taxi drivers henceforth. Total cost for all these "ideas"? Probably 1-2 billion (wild guess I must admit). But will the Penang govt consider this option? What you guys need are true Malaysian (Penangites in particular) who are prepared to work for the good of the island. Where to find them?? Just send out the call through the media ( I mean bloggers like Anil, Din Merican, Rocky and the myriads of others who have joined in the fight for a better Malayia and you can bet you will be able to get the right folks for the right price minus the kick-backs. I know I will be on the way home if my Island home calls.
