And so the Anwar trial continues – while over in Penang, demonstrators protest at what they perceive to be selective enforcement action against illegal Malay hawkers and food-stall operators, an allegation the local government denies.
Mr.Anil,
when ever opposition raises any question Home minister always quote…this is a sensetive issue..bla bla…

Does anyone get a feeling there is a frenzy going on with UMNO/UMNO agents?… They are getting really caught up with going negative against the opposition and not even bothering to defend their failings as they also appear at the same time.
… The problem is the other party is NOT playing their game. They are doing it ALONE..Its not real.. .
Seriously, everything is falling short for UMNO/BN as they launch attack, after attack.
Honestly, things are going quite well for PR and Anwar but its only the first round…
We are hearing about all the Budget cuts for schools. At the same time there was a proposal for Sex Education in Schools and National Services camps.
So the Govt had decided to multi-task and provide an ALL-IN-ONE solution. Once every 10 years… Just about the time a child spends in Primary / Secondary school. Imagine the amount of $$ saved, and that too with multimedia interactive information dissemination.
“One journalist told me that Guan Eng’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik did come down to receive the memo from the organisers on behalf of the chief minister, but he was verbally abused and even chased back. The journalist said he even heard a couple of people in the crowd shouting, “Pukul!“”
So?
Just because people shouted pukul, does that make it a “Pukul” event ?
Just because people protested against Lim Guan Eng, does that make those people … or something?
I don’t get you, Anil.
Why are you trying to make this a black and white issue, as though Lim Guan Eng is right all the way while those doing the protest are wrong?
Why there is no news on those whose stalls have been forcefully bulldozed?
What about the plight of those small business owners?
Of course they count. That is why I recommended that the state govt come up with more conducive alternative sites for those affected as well as loan schemes.
What do you suggest? How would you balance the need for some sort of regulatory framework while protecting the hawkers’/food stall operators’ livelihoods? I would be interested to hear and perhaps the state govt can get some ideas as well.
Anyway, I was just reporting what was happening today including what Ibrahim Ali said. I also provided the state govt’s statistics of the number of affected operators.
I just feel it’s not helpful to play up the racial angle.
You should have reported the ceramah at Seberang Jaya on Wednesday night, where a crowd estimated at 10,000, made up mainly of Malays. It was great to see them hoisting DAP flags and the Chinese and Indians hoisting PAS and PKR flags. The crowd though was 80% Malays, and held in the UMNO stronghold of Arif(?) Shah at the exposition area in Seberang Jaya. It looks like this UMNO stronghold will fall come the next GE, by the reactions of the crowd.
Despite the blitz of bad faiths and reportings in the MSM and the sandiwaras of the 2 PKR MPs, viz. Zahrain and the Tan guy, the crowd were unmoved! They seem to have decided who the devils are. Each time the name of Zahrain and Tan were mentioned, you can here the whistles and boos and the shouts of anger and disgust. And just look at the support for Datuk Mansor. Has the political scenario change so much? Are the Malays really sudah bangun? It is unbelievable the boos that greeted Zahrain, each time his name was mentioned.
Certainly, Anwar, has got no reasons to fear of defections to the BN, clearly, he has the support of the masses and this is going to count. It seemed DAP has made huge strides in the mainly Malay heartlands in Seberang, where PKR is expected to gain at the expense of UMNO Baru come the next election! Really, it was such an experience to be at the venue after 308. It brought back the oomphs of lawan tetap lawan again. Hopefully those were not PAS supporters from Penanti area or from Northern Perak, which are PAS strongholds! Permatang Pauh supporters perhaps? By the look of things, the UMNO Baru type of politickings since the new year, had backfired on them!
Anil,
I believe that the state government would look into the matter. Perhaps, one should start publication of the state budget to see if such scheme is available.
However, like it or not, such scheme going to be limited due to the size of the budget. Less than 500 millions plus reserve the most is 1.5 billion. (Correct me if I am wrong)
Anil,
Look through history. LKY & his magnificient team faced the same problem as LGE is facing. Then, Singapore’s reserve was USD 1 billion in 1965. Unless Penang state government is willing to raise money through
1) CPF/EPF scheme
2) Raising land & development taxes (Remember LGR’s plan of increasing the housing plot ratio)
3) Imposing environmental, congestion taxes
In actual fact, it boils down to Penangites including you yourself the willing to sacrifice some money to greater cause. Ahem……Would you? Would teh Penangites
Anil,
It’s always about economy, STUPID!. Zahrain’s outburst is also about money. Tee Beng’s outburst is also about money (more development fund channel to MP so as to make himself more popular to public). Kapish…..
Anil,
As for conducive sites, these are very very subjective. I can guarantee that no traders would wanna shift regardless how conducive or good the alternative sites. Their reasons are customers used to the old places.
It’s money, money, money, money. IT’S ECONOMY, STUPID!
Some goes to the 300 protested at Komtar today. Not so much about malay tertindas. I DARE TO SAY SINGAPORE MALAY REFUSES TO LEAVE SINGAPORE FOR GREENER PASTURES IN MALAYSIA BECAUSE OF WANG! WANG! WANG! Singaporeans then used to pay 25% of salary into central provident fund. The employers paid the other 25%
Your “state govt come up with more conducive alternative sites for those affected as well as loan schemes” is not much different from the one that has been carried out by the BN government — same wine, different bottles.
Same kind of “Big Brother Lead The Way” type of programs.
Rather than encourage the citizenry to launch their own private initiatives, it’s “Government do this, government do that” and end up government bulldozing stalls, hurting the people rather than helping them.
The problem is that the Penang state government under Lim Guan Eng is performing, in some ways, worse than that of Koh Tsu Koon !
Take the one Malay stall near Bukit Gambir (near Tesco, Glugor), that stall does NOT block any traffic nor create lots and lots of sampah.
I frequent that place for makan, in fact, I know the guy who runs it.
And Lim Guan Eng’s government roboh the whole place.
This is supposed to be a “people’s government”? This is supposed to be a “government that cares for the people”? This is supposed to be “different”?
Oh c’mon !
I am a PR supporter, still actively supporting PR, but I will tell you this — more and more I get the feeling that we have gotten the WRONG guy on the helm.
Lim Guan Eng just don’t understand Penang and he just ain’t gonna make Penang better.
Yeah, that guy talks a lot, but are we voting to kick Koh Tsu Koon out just to get a talkative guy to replace him?
And the thing is, Lim Guan Eng is NOT the only problem. Jeff Ooi is another problem.
The “Low Class Politics”, quoting Wee Choo Keong, that is being played by Jeff Ooi has gone long enough.
We do not need such a guy at the leadership circle for Penang.
Jeff Ooi has publicly slammed (an Islamic NGO) as (extremist) – and he has yet to apologize for that remark.
Then he slammed PKR as having “garbage (remnants)”.
Now he claimed that 4 PKR guy gonna become katak.
Oh, c’mon, Anil !
We Penangites do not vote PR to get such a … you fill in the blank, Anil, since you gonna censored the noun that I gonna use to describe Jeff Ooi anyway … to shame Penang and all Penangites ?
Iron,
So like you said since it did not block or create any sampah, you can just simply put up a stall.
Do you know what you are talking.
If that is the case, I would just love to put up a stall or as many any where else as long as it did not block the road or create any sampah. And it is free rental. As a matter of fact all stalls whether legal or illegal should be cleared of the road. This is what 52 years of BN & KTK Gerakan governance have created such a BIG BIB mess that its become like a cancer that cannot go off. And which have become the mentality of the people that they can just simply trade on the road side without due consideration for the public or without license.
What LGE did is a very unpopular move but it is a good start. One good example is Singapore !!!
It is good to see all the noises created by certain PKR assemblymen… who are making the noises. It is all PKR who are creating the trouble nationwide, especially in PR held states when the assemblymen interests are not taken care of. So the question is, are the assemblyman fighting for their own or for the party or for the rakyat? The votes for DAP and PAS are steadfast from the look of things. The more those people esp. UMNO baru, tried to make use of this troublesome assemblymen, the more resolute the people are to vote for change.
In a democracy, we have to agree that we cannot satisfy all the people all the time. The Government of the day has to do its job. It will do much good for the PR to strengthen without these problematic PKR reps. PAS and DAP are working very well, and it is getting UMNO angry! Perhaps when Tengku, Zaid and Khairy can form another alternative to take over from PKR it will do good. It all depends on the DSAI case anyway. If DSAI goes in, it is the time of Zaid and Co to take over from PKR. PKR is just too much problem. Its assemblymen are working overtime, worst than UMNO to finish off Anwar. While, everyone should rally behind Anwar, these stupid assemblymen, are taking the opportunity to create more chaos to divert the attention of the Sodomy II trial currently ongoing. What can you say of such people? Are they just worth fighting for? What really is the motive? Can we not see the sinister plot to sideline the Anwar sodomy trial? You call these comrades, or subordinates? As a leader, do you want such people?
Talking about the Komtar protest, it is a shameful event organized by the useless Perkasa, and what could they garner, 100 protesters who will be feasted after their acts. Can they go no further than that? Are they not ashamed? Had there never been tearing down of illegal structures or stalls during the BN Government? Do we want order or anarchy? Does the state government not have a duty to ensure hygiene and traffic disposal at the site of these businesses? If illegal stalls and structures are allowed to flourish, then just imagine what the whole place will be?
Anyway, it will be safer to park our votes with DAP come the next GE. PKR? We need to scrutinize all their candidates before voting them. Is PKR just made up of Zulkifli Nordin, Zahrain, Tan Tee Beng, Wee Choo Keong and the Lowe guy from Kelana Jaya? This guy cannot even speak proper Bahasa Malaysia and have you heard him speaking in the Dewan? He is there because of recording the VK Lingam tapes, what else?
… It would be better for PKR if these people are to leave, or we will vote them out come the next GE. Anyway, they will be voted out whatever, the people has decided.
Doesn’t it strike you, Anil, that certain kakis from DAP are as arrogant as those from UMNO?
They bullied everyone once they got to the seat of power, like they have always done to their own comrades inside their own party.
They never understand the meaning of teamwork, they never work as a team.
All they know is to backstabbing whoever is working with them, sabotaging everything.
If PKR can play fair with DAP in Selangor, you think DAP can play fair with PKR in Penang, right?
Wrong !
For DAP, it’s “MY WAY OR HIGHWAY“.
See how that person says, and I quote: “It would be better for PKR if these people are to leave, or we will vote them out come the next GE.”
As if they can control the Penangites !
Lest they forget, before Penangites kicked out Koh Tsu Koon, the same Penang voters have kicked out Lim Kit Siang NOT THAT LONG AGO !
I will never take the Penang voters for granted. I am a Penangite myself and I know for sure we are a very unpredictable bunch.
Watch out, DAP. If you think you can hoodwink the Penangites with your petty lies, see what they will do to you in the coming GE, or the next one after that.
And Jeff Ooi better watch out too. If he keeps on doing like what he has been doing, he will have the same future as Koh Tsu Koon pretty soon.
The ongoing events are part of UMNO’s grand plan to create dissatisfaction & unrest in Penang to overthrow the state government. I stay in Selangor & have seen numerous stalls owned by non-Malays pulled down all the time. Did the non-Malays go around protesting & burning effigy of the MB? We are not so blind as not to see through the works of these bigots.
So far I noticed that PR under heavy attacks–Anwar, PKR internal rift, LGE, PAS (the Disciplinary Committee judgment), etc. PR not only bleeding, but under multiple stroke attacks. A comatose patient on the way. Don’t talk about next GE, maybe they also cannot survive current term. Let’s see what happen to Perak next.
p/s: PR supporters out there, this blog owner has proven a true PR die-hard supporter. Perhaps they should “sayang” him more.
You are being unfair with your comments, when the blog owner highlighted KBP, PICC, Botanical Gardens, PISA etc, you were shouting your throat hoarse in agreement and delight, and now, when he is highlighting the DSAI trial, you say he is a true PR supporter! Where is the logic, bro?
I must agree that those PKR folks are creating too much problem. It will be good if these people are voted out. Hope BN wins a few seats more at the expense of PKR, so there will be less trouble makers! But, where are the seats going to come from? Especially when LGE had made such big headways in the Malay heartlands? Did you attend the ceramah at Seberang Jaya last Wednesday? Gerakan K, you should just see for yourself how the Malays, from the Kampungs, ( semi urban) who are with DAP. You will be surprised! Words like, “tak pernah jumpa seorang ketua menteri yang begitu telus, tidak sombong, adil dan saksama” from the Malays mouth will tell you that the Malays had awoken and realized that DAP takes much better care of them than UMNO Baru.
Cheers bro! And for your further attention, the crowd was 10,000 stron bro.
Gerakan,
Let me ask you few questions. What would you do if you were LGE, facing those demonstrators? Don’t tell me none of these would happen under Gerakan?
Gerakan,
What happen to the torn KOH TSU KOON picture by UMNO? And Zahid Hamidi calling Gerakan especially KOH TSU KOON to be replaced as Penang BN chief?
Gerakan,
Do you know that UMNO did press for Penang chief ministership during the tenure of Lim Chong Eu in the 80s? It was DAP who save you…
Gerakan K,
If LGE & PR cannot survive this term, its is very obvious. The current government under BN_UMNO & Najib (turn a blind eye to) corruption … to stay in power (while) their cronies … siphon of millions of the people resources. And the same goes to Gerakan K, who … is willing to sacrifice whatever dignity he has…
No matter what !!, PR and the people who treasure good governance, transparency and a corrupt free society will solder on and kick out this cancer stricken UMNO once and for all….
They ransacked Selangor even to the extent Teoh Beng Hock lost his life;
Now, they kacau Penang… They bully Lim Guan Eng…
Dont forget, God is watching !!!
p/s Iron, dont you realise illegal stalls do create traffic congestion, just because your favourite stall has to be relocated, so you are throwing tantrum here. This is the attitude of Penang people as what they care about is their own convenient.
I agree with you absolutely that all in PR should work hand in glove to ensure absolute victory.
Do you agree that PAS be given more seats in Penang to contest come the next election? As it is, Malays now form the majority in Penang, and PAS as a national party should be given more exposure in this State? In 2020, most seats in the peninsular will be Malay majority seats, so it definitely makes sense that PAS as the second largest Muslim party be given more exposure to win the hearts of the non-Malays.
I have mentioned many times, again and again, that PAS is the real deal! PAS and DAP since their formation, had never deviated from their ideology and principles. While I came from very far to support Keadilan in 1998 during their first ceramah with DAP and PAS at the Dewan Sri Pinang, (I still have the first Keadilan badge with me,) I think PKR now is too weak as the internal fightings are causing them to lose too much goodwill among the general populace. Do you agree? Their tendency to pick on DAP instead of UMNO Baru and other component parties certainly do not bode well for PR. How can they rule a state like Penang? They need to be supportive and not being reactive when they do not get what they want. Look at the way, DAP is playing the supportive role in Selangor, do DAP MPs and assemblymen shoot their mouths so often to the MSM? Do they ask for this project and that, and if they do not get it, they shoot their mouths and say the PKR are communist minded? If DAP MPs and assemblymen were to be as arrogant as the PKR MPs in Penang, the Selangor State Government will fall instantly! Teoh Beng Hock lost his life and PKR led Government in Selangor survived, otherwise pity YAB Khalid (another gem of a guy, unlike those from PKR, Penang, too petty and self centred!) But, in the true spirits of cooperation, I, a kampung guy only, I do not live in the city, I give my votes to the DAP as they had been truly cooperative, not only with PAS but with the weak PKR, to shore them up. Without DAP, PKR can only dream of ruling Selangor, whereas DAP can rule Penang with PAS on a simple majority, without PKR, therefore PKR needs to be a team player for the good of Pakatan.
Look at Pakatan in Perak, who won the most seats? It is the DAP, and yet they supported the best candidates amongst the Malays to be the CM, and true enough, Nizar, had provened himself to be a new breed of leaders to watch. I feel the DAP struggles very much for the Rakyat without being demanding like the PKR. There were struggles initially between PKR and PAS for the coveted CM’s post, PKR is just too much into the desire to seize power at this point of time. All should realize that without the support of one another the PR State Government will fall like ten pins in Selangor. Luckily, in Penang, the people are smart enough to return DAP in every seat they contested in. Truly, Penangnites have got to be congratulated for their wise choice. Long live the DAP led PR Government in Penang. Together DAP, PAS and PKR will lead Penang for many many more years to come. Penangnites truly boleh!
All around the world, protesters express distaste and hate towards individuals by burning effigies of them. Yet in Penang protest last week, M’siakini reported that the protesters burnt their own memorandum of protest along with LGE’s effigy..
guess they didn’t like their own memorandum as well =P
“This gathering is not a racial gathering. I am here to defend the Bumiputera”
My great fear is that one day an equally lucid NGO would come up with a category they claimed I am a member of and would use it as justification to tell the world they speak for me.
Sean,
Whether it is racial or not, one thing is for sure, it is politically motivated. If it is not racial, then these NGOs should have protested for all, whether Chinese, Indian, Malays & others, whose stall s that have been demolished not just Malay.
I cannot understand why Ibrahim and UMNO (supporters) want to demonstrate in Komtar with lies. That area is at least 80% Chinese. Those idiots are ensuring a zero chance to Gerakan in regaining that seat.
If there is any Chinese in DAP the Malays can trust, that would be Lim Guan Eng. After all, not a single Malay politician came to the aid of a Malay grandmother whose grand daughter was (allegedly) raped by a senior Malay politician. Guan Eng was sentenced to 18 months in jail for this pursuit of justice and lost his means of livelihood as an MP, including his pension.
A few people such as Gerakan K, Iron is pro BN and others well you know and I know.
In summary – IRON would like Penang to become a slump area….. a state without law where anything goes. You can erect stall anywhere you like as long as did not block traffic. Where MPPP going to earn income for their coffers. Well let say if IRON stay in a DSTH, at night a burger stall open everyday will he / she happy as despite they will clean up but people stop by to buy or their friends hang around and radio are played. I disgusted with IRON pathethic explanation….
What the state government need to do is to provide soft loan for “hawkers” for self reliance and provide them a lot at food court. What the mistake the state government does is without proper handling which makes it blow out of proportion.
To tell you the truth I’m a pro Dap supporter. I sometimes criticize send email to DAP to inform how to reach my assemblyman YB Yeoh Soon Hin – Paya Terubong. I recently test by sending to YB LGE to see will I ever get a respond. If the assemblyman will only shake your hand during general he / she will get an earful remarks / tick off by me. So far my assemblyman is not working compare to my ex MP Loh Hock Aun and assemblyman YB Ghee at least I met them. By the YB Ghee was my form 6 school teacher. I think PR assemblyman need to learn from BN how to work and instead of being seen working (fake).
Anyway, BN unable to get Penang. You know why? BN present politician is bankrupt (no $$) since no project. YOu know why DAP/PKR/PAS in Penang will become second state after Kelantan in the hands of Pakatan forever.
Reason
a) my friends who own factories – easy to do business with the government. No need to pay coffee money to get things done or apply for certain concession
b) my malay friends although from UMNO no need to pay 10% commission and can equally fight it out for open tendering of state government projects….
c) Under bafia I can’t tell you but the coffers of Penang state government $$ on upward trend.
d) Civil servant are happy as efficiency increases.
Same to U Anil. Nice wishing u back

And one more thing, Anil — when did I play any racial angle in this case?
Stop erecting strawman, Anil.
I clearly mentioned “small business owners”, and did I say “Malay small business owners” ?
No !
I point to the fact that one place I used to go makan is near the Tesco Glugor area, and happened to own by a Malay.
Is that “playing racial angle”?
What? I can’t even mention any stall now?
Is that it?
DAP is so draconian that they can bulldoze other people’s stall and no one can mention anything about anything?

I didn’t mean you playing up the racial angle. I was referring to some of those behind the protest yesterday. I should have made it clearer.

Anil,
It is good to see all the noises created by certain PKR assemblymen… who are making the noises.

Hello Gerakan K,
You are being unfair with your comments, when the blog owner highlighted KBP, PICC, Botanical Gardens, PISA etc, you were shouting your throat hoarse in agreement and delight, and now, when he is highlighting the DSAI trial, you say he is a true PR supporter!

UMNO is reverting to 1969 by invoking religious and racial issues in order to gain Malay support.
Sadly, this underhanded tactic still works.

They robbed Perak;
They ransacked Selangor even to the extent Teoh Beng Hock lost his life;
Now, they kacau Penang… They bully Lim Guan Eng…
Dont forget, God is watching !!!
p/s Iron, dont you realise illegal stalls do create traffic congestion, just because your favourite stall has to be relocated, so you are throwing tantrum here. This is the attitude of Penang people as what they care about is their own convenient.

Kee,
I agree with you absolutely that all in PR should work hand in glove to ensure absolute victory.

Anil,
Something I find funny:

Dear Anil
In my opinion, this is a fair blog.
You tell me.
