Remember A Kugan, who died in police custody?
Well, he died as a result of “acute renal failure due to rhabdomyolysis due to blunt trauma to skeletal muscles,” an independent second post mortem has revealed. In layperson’s language: kidney failure as a result of repeated beatings. More accurately, his death was due to his muscle cells disintegrating into his bloodstream and absorbed by the kidney, which led to kidney failure.
His body also had severe burn wounds including those caused “by the repeated application of heat with an instrument or object with a triangular surface, causing multiple V-shaped imprint burn wounds on the skin of back”.
The pathologist who conducted the independent second post mortem also detected severe hemorraging and blood clots. Check out the post mortem report here by Dr Prashant N Samberkar, Department of Pathology, University of Malaya.
Those responsible for Kugan’s horrific torture and death have a lot to answer for. The authorities must also outline the steps they are taking to ensure such incidents do not recur. Setting up the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission would be a step in this direction.
Amazingly, the findings of the second post mortem report are so different from the first. The Serdang Hospital personnel who conducted the first examination must now explain why all this was not detected or highlighted in their post mortem report. Fluid in the lungs? How many other post mortems have there been like this?
What have you got to say, Serdang Hospital?
How the can the first pathologist issue a death cert without proper eviscerate of the pertinent organs is beyond believe. Why was the abdomen not examined? What has the coroner to say about this?
It’s not just about the police now. The licence to practice of the first pathologist should be reviewed by the proper medical bodies.

So what are authorities waiting for? The evidence is so glaring for everyone to see. Is the police gonna wait and declare NFA?
Just imagine if the parents didn’t “barge” into the mortuary that day and took all those pictures; the … who committed this barbarious act would have just swept everything under the carpet.
And oh can the authorities please sack the doctor who did the first post-mortem and declared that Kugan died of asthma?
Is it in any way possible way to start enquiring into similar cases from the past? Let’s start from Francis Udayappan shall we?

Appalling! For those who do not wish to wade through the medical jargon, take a look at page 11 and 12 – a picture says a thousand words.
The last time I saw images like that, I was in Cambodia looking through the Tuol Sleng museum where the Khmer Rouge systematically incarcerated the educated class (keeping the people ignorant made them easier to govern – sound familiar?), tortured then killed them.

I think the Malaysian Medical Council should deregister the Serdang Pathologist who faked the 1st Postmortem report. Whoever he is, he clearly does not have any professional ethics as a medical practitioner let alone as a human being. He lied in his report. Either that or he is so incompetent, the MMC has to act. Failing which, MMC stands accused of condoning medical hypocrisy and incompetence.

In some countries far more developed than Malaysia those responsible for such misconduct take their own life out of shame….

The authority was trying to cover their a## in the first post mortem, was not that not obvious or are we, having poorly staffed qualified medical practioners to mananging Serdang Hospital?
Although, we have now the factual findings of the second post mortem, one should not expect too much. The Malaysians by now are used to the dubious behavior of the authority…at most, a ‘bollywood show’ will be fed to the public.

Roslan said the AG’s statement could be misinterpreted and seen as encouraging crime as well as protecting criminals.
He argued that the police should not be blamed for Kugan’s death as they were merely discharging their duty.

In a case like this, (were) the first doctor and the police officers in the torture must be acting in cohorts to cover-up the murder? I would also investigate at least 2 or 3 levels futher up the food chain.
At the very least the doctor should be charged with criminal neglect and at worst abetment. I would also check if it is the same doctor who has been giving the police a clean bill these past years…

Hi everyone,
The MMC must now initiate an investigation of possible professional negligence and/or ‘fraud’ of those medical staff involved in the first post mortem report.
The least that high ranking police personnel and politicians, the AG, and others, who were quick to come out with declarations that Kugan died of ‘fluid in the lungs’ and not due to physical abuse/assaults,is to publicly apologise to Kugan’s family.
The second post mortem report shows that such brutalities, even resorting to possible scorching with hot iron is even worse than what we accused the Americans of in Guantanomo!
