We want those bad laws to be done away with, not enforced, even if impartially. In so far as they threatened bloodshed, there must be a law against that. But far, far better for other Muslims and, in particular, the teachers and leaders, to come out against this behaviour and the argument that because some location is 80% Muslim, then there can't be temples or churches. If the same argument were to be applied impartially to say, Tg Bunga in Penang, then there would be no mosques. Indeed, there would be very few mosques in a state like Sarawak where non-Muslims make up about 3/4 of the population. Incidentally, the temple in question was in the broad locality long before there was a Shah Alam. If anything, that temple is more native to the locality than many of the current residents who are immigrants from elsewhere in the country. Finally, regarding drrafick in rights2write: While his sentiments are noble, I think the use of the term "Orang Ulu" is misguided and insensitive to the fact that there is a group of people in Sarawak who call themselves "Orang Ulu" and are very, very far from barbaric. If anything, they are almost the exact opposite -- cultured, hospitable, tolerant. The goons that went on the demonstration are emphatically not "Orang Ulu", they are urban thugs and bullies, and there are plenty of those around. Fortunately, the majority of the moslems in the country have spoken against this kind of extremism. Exploiting race and religion for political expediency is not going to make the country progress. Without support from the outside world our economy will suffer. These extremists, apparently, do not understand this and they are giving a bad name to the country. Everyone has a right to worship, it is a GOD given right, GOD has given man freedom to choose. These kind of acts do not promote Islam but rather give them negative pubilicity. I believe not all Malays are like that, but sad to see so much intolerance in Malaysia today. What is the point of religion if it brings fighting and intolerance among the people GOD created. Should we not be kind and compassionate to one another irrespective of race or religion. Whether one likes it or not Malaysia is compromised by different religions and diffeent races.
