Infrastructure ministers and senior officials from Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore met in Singapore over the weekend to share experiences and exchange best practices on building sustainable and highly liveable environments. The 10th Ministers’ Forum on Infrastructure Development in the Asia-Pacific Region was centred on the theme of “Infrastructure for Sustainable Development: Creating Liveable Communities”. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/asia-pac-ministers-affirm/1131830.html To affirm their commitment to sustainable development and the creation of liveable communities, the ministers endorsed and adopted a joint declaration which outlined the areas for greater cooperation and collaboration between member countries. Those areas include sustainable urbanisation, planning and management… Read more »

To ensure the survival of Proton, public transportation will never be improved!
That M guy is made chairman for that reason.

With Dr m again with proton and cronies owning the tolls, it is going to be lip service similar to bank rakyat. Just look at the double tracking implemented during Dr m period. What happen? Rapid penang is federal government run but not willing to spend more except the hardware and soon looks like bone shaker.

You still want cheap and on the island? In hk, affordable housing are those not on the idland but in new territories which takes about an hour to city centre by public transport and the frequency is about 5 mins. In sinkapore, it is pinggol or sembawang. Not only new housing, but even prices gor 2nd houses go up everywhere not just penang. Why not throw the question to umno federal government. What have they done to help young ones to own homes and improve public transport through commercial licensing and licence to a group to operate?

Umno federal government would not improve public transportation as it encourages car-ownership to keep Proton afloat.

Everyone is staking their claims on little islands or outcrops in the sea: China vs Japan in East China, China vs Vietnam in South China,

Now Johor is entering the fray to reclaim Pulau Batu Tiga from Singapore?
We may see the action from our Scorpene submarines soon?

If you think about it, its not a simple question. In some ways Penang is not that different than Singapore. It has a large diaspora, it also has a large “new resident” population. Its constraints by resources, power and choices. But Penang is a state, does not control its borders. Big difference is that Penang has a very significant population of volunteer citizens passionate about it while Singapore has National Service. A Singapore NSmen, given he is forced to put his life on the line, has much more right of say of his abode. In reality Singapore is owned partly… Read more »

I beg to disagree on some points comparing Penang to SingLand: In Penang – 1) there is no such thing as widespread HDB flats of accountable distribution to genuine buyers (some low cost housing can become ‘middle-cost’ after signing of S&P) 2) no such thing as a centralised mission & vision to bring & effect sustainable development (lands, hills & seas are left to the mercies or greed of developers some of whom can ‘rape’ nature in broad daylight seen from miles away without punity for months) 3) it has a new class of foreign full-time, season-timed residents who invested… Read more »

There are things that Penang can emulate Singapore.

Look at this youtube video of Jurong Eco-Garden, just opened in Singapore’s industrial zone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXTvXMa_g5w

The five-hectare garden was opened on Sunday and It features walking trails, a butterfly garden and a freshwater swamp. It is part of the freshwater swamp and has been enhanced so that it can capture 65% of the rainwater runoff here. That water is then filtered and recycled for other uses in the park — for example, for general outdoor washing, to flush the toilets and to irrigate the plants.

CAT doesn’t care a damn if majority of Penangites transmigrate to other states or further inland-mainland to make room for the rich & famous. No incentives whatsoever to help majority own a home affordable in the real sense. See for yourself, what majority of homes are being built in most of Penang & the price tags. Many Penangites feel the same when talking about this housing issue. I have had an experience with one developer who started selling his condos for Rm180K, then increase price to Rm280K-300K within a year. Call that market sentiments? Whether being a state or nation… Read more »

Singapore is a nation and penang is a state. Sinapore has seen massive land reclamation. Singapore nation wants its citizen to own homes as a sense of belongings. PAP has been in power since early 60s. DAP just started. Singapore does not need CAT because it has been clean since ,70s. HK, Macau, Singapore has all have more highrise and land reclamation. Lucky HK and macau can have power plant, resevoirs, in China otherwise they need more land. Even Shenzhen opposite HK with plentiful land had to carry out reclamation. Houses in kl, johor also go up.

Penang island now divided between the rich from upper middle class & above (love lifestyles as defined by consumerism eg shopping malls & super condos & live to eat/spend) and the middle middle class and below (eat to live category). This is the ugly truth of urbanization in capitalist world ! Don’t believe can refer to last Saturday’s The Star article on income gaps in Malaysia & the middle-class blues (as transformed by barang naik phenomena ?) Quote : Data provided by the Performance Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu), which is the special government agency tasked to drive Malaysia to high-income… Read more »

High household debt is common now that young people can buy latest gadgets on monthly instalment. Behold the interest rate is going up soon! Meanwhile 50% of people in Teluk Intan, especially the older ones are desperate for development to vote for BN in order for BN to create jobs so that their children do not migrate to big cities. They are looking forward to Universiti Teluk Intan with Mah as Chancellor, high speed broadband from Shabery Cheek, strong RELA team from Zahid to improve security, highway from Muhyidin, Unesco status for the leaning tower to draw more tourists…. Wah!… Read more »

Tan Kok Ping has the right to sue. In fact, he must sue if he was maligned by a state rep as the truth is a matter of public interest. As such, I don’t agree with the suggestion that the state government uses its power or influence to circumvent the process of justice.

The Lims, of course. Until they build more super condos and foreigners buy it.

Who owns Penang Island? This question should be posed to the state gomen (right from the morning after 308), MPPP, the recalcitrant developers, the arrogant tycoons, the corporate gangsters, the ‘rapists of Botak Hill & Tanjung Bungah hills, the procrastinators of Penang Local Plan in perpetual hiding. Remember this – Penangites are born here before the developers or politicians came here to cari-makan. The majority have a say in how the state is run, developed & heading to where. Not to be threatened by tycoon’s lawsuits, not ‘bluffed’ with surreal threats of compensations to developers who have yet to obtain… Read more »

You behave like umno, dont talk about penang born for all are migrants depending which period they move it. Just like people in kl, all are migrants. You are like hongkies complaining too many tourists from mainland come and result in congestion in public transport, jams in shopping malls, buying baby milk and also in properties. Or in down under, work visa holders are taking all the jobs. You are just another unreasoning and ignorant person

You are very simplistic and ignorant. Who makes law foreigners can own properties? Whar is macc been doing? Gaunxi is not a form of induced corruption like in China and down under? Macc is very trigger happy ti have LGE in jail like what they did ti Anwar and Karpal.

Law is law and one has the right to sue. If it is wrong, then it will be thrown out and the cost be paid. Why worry if one is not wrong unless justice is no standard under gerakan- umno federal government

tunglang

You are very ignorant & simplistic naive of political development in Penang since 308.
Some corporate tycoons have ‘close guanxi’ with certain political entities/personalities to further their own win-win formula of self-interests.
To let this “suing business” becomes a corporate precedence is boding bad for the genuine interests of the ordinary people fought by brave hearts. Not much different from BeeEnd’s statute of OSA to gag informers or whistle blowers.

Btw, where is the effective law for Botak Hill? A law in Penang is a law, isn’t it?

Penangite are born here before the CAT come here and start messing as if it is his own. We must make sure he go. Penangite can do it. Tell the CAT don`t be arrogant. There are 11 UMNO seats and 14 vulnerable seats that MCA and Gerakan can take over.

cwf, when DAP took over, Penang & increasingly the mainland has become the land for the rich & famous. Now, where will the ordinary ‘boh bing chui’ Penangites stand as their home state? Already many households are in deep-s… debts, to encourage these recalcitrant but rich-not-enough developers to change the economic landscape & lifestyle is unexpected of a socio-economic reform for Penang as promised by CAT. Btw, where is the Local Plan (still in perpetual hiding) to mitigate such unprecedented development? In my hind sight, the CAT hidden agenda is to prolong the absence of the Local Plan so that… Read more »
