Comment posted Commercial property glut in Penang by looes74.
Morning,
Keyword here is to strike a balance. Singapore has always been a socialist state. But Singapore realise that it needed money to develop the country. LKY & his first generation government resulting in “prostituting” themselves in attracting investments from overseas. With funds, LKY can initiate programmes such as beautification of River of Singapore. Now, it’s drinkable with reservoir created in Marina Bay

As for Singapore, lets the fact speaks for itself. Like the Great Deng saidRegardless of white or black cat, a cat catches mices is a good cat
Of course, the matter that Penang Government must take seriously. However, intervention by the state must be done with tact. It’s better to have glut rather than shortage resulting in skyrocketting price
Penang government could charge upsize the land development fee. Penang government is still lacking of fund so to speak

Gerakan,
What if the money comes from the Malaysian public? Think along that line. But then, why the SDO so busybody of condemning a duly elected politician? Ah so…. - PICC still on the cards
Sorry Anil to bring out the old topic. Remember Kampung Buah Pala….What say you on this? Same analogy can use too….Aiyaa…..This one I am with you…..But only because of money no enough

Anil,
The newspaper that old man says that Gerakan would lose Penang forever. The very few words by Lim Kheng Yaik - Speakers’ Square: Hecklers enter the fray
O,
I agreed that it’s Chee Koon’s fault in asking for the procession. You can’t deny the fact he stands for bangsa malaysia. Anyway Chee Koon left Gerakan…..He was one of the few Independent candidates that I admire - RM525m donation is chicken-feed…
Anil,
Amazing….Generous act….Wah! kenna macam like receiving crumbs from the table. I say to Vincent Tan & the rest of the gang. Lets nationalised all gambling licences. Including Genting Berhad if possible. Put it under One National Body. Since the federal government is so untrustworthy, get those thrustworthy folks to run them & channel all money directly to the poeple.
How about that?Anil,
If ever the present government has as high integrity as Singapore government, perhaps, follow Singapore stylehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Pools

What more to expect from LGE administration?
High Speed Demolish & Build. This should be their day-to-day standard operating principle. Luckily he only a Penang CM. I cannot imagine if he is Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang or Selangor CM/MB. We will observe new standard operating princple: “Let’s CAT the forest” or “Concrete the forest competition”
don’t … lah Gerakan K, Sabah problems worst than Penang. The only problem is main stream media don’t dare to report the short fall.
If BN so good why Sabah until today Still do not have a decent hospital?…
The Gurney Paragon project consists of two 43-storey service apartment towers, a 37-storey business tower and other commercial buildings.

LGE is asking the traders in all the shopping complexs to vote against him when biz is bad.
There has to be a balance of both development and maintenance. At any given point the balance can shift from one end to the other. Both gives economic value to the state.
Currently, with global downturn in the tourist industry building new hotels and tourist destinations would seem irrational but there is another point of view. If the industry picks up in the future, will Penang be ready to cater for the influx? We may at that point judge the government for lack of future insight and preparedness.
It is a gamble and I know the feeling. Penang has tourism and industry on its top economic list. They would therefore, developed that sectors rather than others. Building new hotels is required by economic means at this point of time. Overspending is also not acceptable.
I REALISE THE ISSUES. THIS IS JUST INFORMATION FOR YOUR CONSUMPTION. Economic decisions is economic and not social in nature. Social values does not generate income. It requires giving not taking (A Loss). A government in deficit cannot run and will fail. Who is going to pay for its running? A people dissatisfied will vote out this government.
NO WIN WIN SITUATION HERE!!?? Have to strike a balance of both ends.
“Economic decisions is economic and not social in nature. Social values does not generate income. It requires giving not taking (A Loss).” – Eloi
This is a rather short sighted view of life. Economics decision cannot and should not be made in vacuum, divorced from the rest of life. A good example would be the experiences of developed nations. At the point in which economic decisions were to be made it often seemed economically sound until years down the road where society has to pay for the cost of economic decisions earlier on.
Kuantan has a project at the moment of extracting rare-earth metal. The ore is taken from perth, australia – enriched to reduce transport cost and then sending it to kuantan. The economic argument was that it is so much more cost-effective in kuantan because of the amount of water that we have. It was a lot cheaper to produce here.
On the surface it was an economically sound project but if you were to dig a bit deeper you would realise that water was not the reason that the operation from australia was moved to malaysia. The actual reason was that the western nations had learned their lessons and impose a heavy economic costs on the pollution and long-term health damage to people and to the environment. But in malaysia the idiot(this word is not strong enough) who gave a briefing on how safe it was to throw away these radioactive waste, after diluting it, to farmers as fertilisers and manufacturing radioactive gypsum board. No where in the world would they dilute and dispose but only in malaysia. Malaysia certainly boleh.
Economically the project seemed sound but the impact on the environment and the long-term health of the people comes with a very heavy cost. Who will bear this cost ?
Don’t you think it is “economically sound” and “of value” to keep the workers healthy ?

This was something I wrote in response to a video protraying LKY in not so nice terms. The comment was from http://mt.m2day.org/2008/content/view/23711/34/.
There is a subtle but vital difference between balance and manipulation and control.
I supposed after this post LKY’s (supporters) will come after me again.
—-start quote—–
Much of what was said is not new. The principles enunciated in the video continue to be valid and relevant. Many of the events and personalities that had been affected one way or another by KuanYew were only given very scant mention. Much of the details could of course be found elsewhere.
The joke by a foreign tourist was amusing and couldn’t pass without been mentioned. The tourist observed that singaporeans worshipped the goddess of mercy kuanyin and lived on an island governed by a ‘god’ of no mercy…
LKY had ran and built up singapore very much like a bonsai master. I always find bonsai a very strange hobby. But people had found it to be relaxing while others found it beautiful, very much like singapore island and yet others found it to be a lucrative venture.
A bonsai master basically pull, tug, tie and cut the plant to create an impression of beauty. To prevent the tree from growing too large the bonsai master would lift up the roots and snipped off any roots that had grown beyond what was deemed acceptable.
This was how singapore was shaped and formed. Whatever budding root, no matter how innocuous or benefitial to the island would be snipped off. But LKY is even more advanced than the bonsai master in that he laid poisons all over areas that he would not allow the roots to grow(out of bound markers). Any root venturing beyond certain point would have poison smeared all over the root. Everything around the root will also be poisoned to prevent the root from growing up.
To some when they looked at the bonzai would proclaim it is beautiful. In fact many would say the same. Accolades may even be won. If we look just a bit beyond the facade one would start to notice that something is terribly wrong. The plant is old and its years of struggle can be seen on the branches. There is sadness all bounded up in a tiny package.
If the tree had been allowed to prosper and grow to its glorious potential it would have dance with the wind, sang with the birds and touch the heavens. Alas this is not to be for the bonsai master proudly declared “I have created and all is well.”
Bonsai is pleasing to alot of people mostly because it has great psychological satisfaction of manipulation and control. This is why I always find it a very strange and disturbing past-time.

Many of us will still in Tongshan or Himalayas. Why the pommies kill the big cats (tigers) and destroy the jungles and tin mining the earth? In doing so, they have to get workers and professionals from those places in before the WW2. many of us will still in India, Sri lanka (to be kiled in the civil wars) or Warlords of China, Famine, Rabies in India or Hunger in China. What say you?
I don’t quite follow your logic or illogic.
Are you saying that singapore’s approach to economic development by suppressing dissent and sacrificing basic human decency and values is the way forward for malaysia and others ?
Or are you argueing as the singapore government often argued that a few rights and values and human (freedoms) have to be sacrificed for the greater good of the society ?
If it is then read again the metaphor I used about the bonsai plant. There is a better way forward and malaysia under the right leadership could bring forth a new and better way of development – not only economically but socially. Social ills have economic costs and this is often not factored into the economic development model but someone has to pay for this sooner or later.
Actually there are two-sides to a coin. You may argue that to build during this time would be lower in costs. It takes at least two to three years for the project to be ready for use. By that time, economy should pick up. So we cannot make decisions just based on present situation, as far as properties are concerned. How we wish we have a crystal ball!
Government ought to butt out of private enterprise. If there is overbuilding for private projects, the industry will regulate itself. People who walk the talk with their own money should be allowed to continue.
Dear Brothers
“Penang Boleh” to provided if PCCC and Tan Kok Ping put forward the pproposal to LGE.

Morning Dew is talking about the rare-earth project by Lynas in Kuantan. http://www.lynascorp.com
The reason they are here is because Australia (allegedly) is against the processing of rare earth over there and also the shipment of the earth from China to Oz.
Last time I looked out the window into the world of the private sector it said “You risk your money, whether you prosper or you die is your own fate”. How can LGE be held responsible ove5r how the private sector invest its money. People like Gerakan K and Ong Eu Soon have been living under the BN tempurung to understand that no one owes you a living in the real world of the private sector.
Agreed, Vinnan. Gerakan K and Ong Eu Soon are definitely people with vested interests, more so the latter, not so much the former, but we need to commend him for his endless pro BN stand that is beyond reasons at times!
Cannot accept the new political landscape, I guess after decades of good times?
Stay on and bide your time, as it is, Penang is LGE to lose if he mismanages the place. Sometimes, it is difficult to meet the requests of all. This we must accept, but, he needs to understand the sentiments of Penangnites, like the Botanical Garden issue, the continued developments of hillslopes and the cutting of trees. These are matters that touch Penangnites to the heart and it does make a difference if attended to properly, as the Botanical Garden is one of the only green lungs left for the islanders!
Wait – that includes the 19 year old boy name Dalbinder. He speaks half truth…challenges an ADUN for a debate and tries to inflitrate into the State Government through various means. I hope he wakes up because he is one confused boy.
Dear DAP Cybertroopers
As I had said many times here before, just because we disagree with LGE and his destructive, diasaterous policies it doesn’t mean we are BN lovers. I am not sure about others here, certainly I voted and campaigned vigourously for DAP in the last GE.
However, many of us have become disillustioned and now even alarmed with the unkept promises and 360 degree aboutturn on policies by LGE’s Development Above People.
Here’s a classic example where the people who speak up for goog governance and justice are being accused of being anti government. This reminds me of dictatorial regimes where the state rules with iron fist with the support of willing party faithfuls who act as stormtroopers to crush even the slightest dissent.
There are 2 sides to a coin, 2 opposite stands to an argument. When the government is listening, it doesn’t mean it has to be agreeable to you before you call it a government of the people. Businessmen and investors are people too and they also deserve to be given attentive ears.
There must be a balance to the needs of everyone and the final stand taken must be seen fair.
I don’t think any PR state government has the ability to crush a dissent.
They have to cross over to BN, at least for the next 3 years, to do so.
K, I admire your patience but, really I think the truth has to be said. These DAP Cyberjellyfish are onto anilnetto.com talking crap. Haven’t you noticed? Isn’t it obvious, cyberjellyfish are paid or hope to be paid — to do the job of discrediting every issue raised that is not pro dap.
Para cyberjellyfish, go find a decent way of livelihood la.
Hello? Glad to hear that you campaigned so vigorously and voted for DAP! So what makes the about turn? In so short a period of time? Less than twenty months?
Come on, as an infant, we are just starting to walk a bit steadily after a 20 months of life, and that too with proper care. Here we have everyone going after LGE’s head, some because of the inability to secure contracts, some because of vested interests and there always some under the sour grapes group? Which one art thou Gerakan K?
Remember, Gerakan had under KTK, uninterrupted and
excellent relationship with the Federal Government for almost two decades, what are the results that KTK had brought to Penang in 20 years? Besides, what Tun had done prior to KTK, what had the latter really contributed to Penang as a whole? The fact that, and it is painful to accept is that Penang had always been left to rot by the Federal Government, knowing fully well that Penang can be lost at any time as this is relatively a state which enjoys one of the highest literacy rate in the country. But make no mistake, no mistake at all, that the literacy rate is not the work of the Federal Government, more so through the sheer hardwork and desire of Penangnites at large to make the place the way it had been and the way it is. It is the result of the efforts put in by the private sector and not being reliant on the assistance of the Federal Government! Remember what Lim Keng Yaik said after the routing they received in 308? He said, I quote” It is like beggars to be in the BN Government”. So you can very well determined the fact that, Penang had received minimum support from the Government under Gerakan, and the end result is, it is today trailing behind states like Johore and Melaka.
We should give the PR led Government a chance to settle down, after all they had been in Government for only 20 months. What can a Government achieve
within such a short period of time? Remember, that too, with endless efforts to sabotage its works, especially from those in Gerakan, whom we must admit is bankrupt of ideas to win back the electorates.
Considering the endless and negative efforts by all in BN to destabilise the Government, the PR had done well considering the fact that at least for the time being, we do not hear of large land scandals, corruption within the Government had definitely been minimised, do you not agree, Gerakan K?
Rome is not build in a day, therefore, let us allow the Penang Government to continue with its efforts to govern. Slowly, but surely, they will be able to settle down and build a better Penang for all. We are now staring at an imminent snap poll, all these are efforts to destabilise PR held states, to divert their attention from Governing and to pay attention to the impending poll. So, it is only fair that we, the Rakyat should park our votes with the PR for at least another two terms for it to be able to perform as per expectations!
Patience is a virtue, together we will make a difference.
