Malaysia’s fugitive blogger Raja Petra has received a standing ovation at a talk in a packed lecture theatre in London.

That’s according to a tweet by Padraig Reidy, the news editor of Index on Censorship (a British organisation promoting freedom of expression) and former deputy editor of New Humanist.

Raja Petra was scheduled to speak at the BPP Law School lecture theatre along Red Lion Street in Holborn from 1.00pm to 3.00pm (London time). The talk on ‘Media Law and Freedom of Expression’ was organised by the Media Law Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA).

“If Malaysian authorities want him, they’ll have to go through UK courts,” Padraig tweeted today.

In his talk, Raja Petra touched on the ISA, proclamations of emergency in Malaysia and the lack of freedom of expression.

A tweet by a Danny Lim revealed the popular blogger was well protected by hefty beef-cakes: “Wah, two men-in-black heavies escorting RPK.”

“I wonder how many JPA scholars are here to listen to RPK,” he mused.

  1. Hey Anil, on another note, Jeff Ooi must be kicked out next GE. He’s beginning to act like a BN man who threatens to use the Sedition Act, even though he has no power to do so. (Yo Gerakan K, pit yourself against Jeff Ooi in Jelutong, that’ll be interesting to see.)

To RPK, keep up the fight for a better Malaysia. Without people like you, many blatant wrongdoings would not have been exposed, and we would be kept dumb and function like robots, oblivious to what is happening around us.

    • Just where is Scotland Yard? Who is lying? The deputy IGP or RPK?

      http://www.mmail.com.my/content/36979-scotland-yard-help-nab-rpk

Why did they not nab the most wanted man in Malaysia? Where is the cooperation between Malaysian Police and Scotland Yard?

This man will give endless headache to the Government and in the process educate millions of Malaysians on their democratic rights! Surely, something is very wrong with our MSM, if what we understand from other reports are true, i.e. RPK is not a wanted person, there is no extradition agreement between Malaysia and Britain?

And where is the Gerakan cheerleader who had always criticize RPK for fleeing? Just that he is a follower of Sun Tzu! He had chosen his territory! He wants a fair fight on a level playing field! And I do not have much faith on the report that MACC is willing to meet PI Bala in London to take his statements! The authorities must show its sincerity and MSM must show its responsibility.

      Salam Reformasi! PAS for All!

      • Gerakan K,

Podah dei, you want miracles from PR led Government in Penang?

Give you some hint, hush, hush,

Whatever anyone says, DAP led Government is a showcase of good management = Baradan Kuppusamy -The Star.

Penang is hiring – 20,000 jobs, LGE looking frantically for qualified engineers, as the brain drain caused by the bad management of Gerakan led many to flee Penang.

With tremendous strides made by the two short years of PR rule, Penang is now the ranked the 8th most livable city in Asia. (All medias)

Former Government led by Gerakan of Penang, results shown so far after two years as Opposition, though without any seat in the State Assembly or Parliament.

        1) Multi Lingual road signs protest.
        2) Protest State Governments plastic bags campaign
        3) Protest the giving out of 100 RM to old folks
        4) Gerakan Youths were present during an umno baru led protest which led to the burning of the effigy of LGE.
        5) Protest that prices of hawker food may go up by .20 to .30 cents

That is the secret miracles ok?

Surely, you can win back Penang with the above tips for you.

Cheers, Salam Reformasi, PAS for All.

        • Great one, O

As for test, just tell the above mentioned to any penangite. They will give you no to average feel good response. But who brings the MNCs to Penang ??? The rocket ???

And for second test, just tell KBP miracle to penangites in SD. Blood is boiling hot instantly. Of course, you can twist and turn in this issue but people there already decided to pick a non-rocket next time. A safe seat for BN candidate.

And for third test, examine PAS FOR ALL slogan with actual practices, you will notice that PAS OPPOSE BEER, PAS OPPOSE GAMBLING, PAS IMPLEMENT SEGREGATION, PAS WANT HUDUD, PAS WANT MUSLIM ADMINISTRATOR AT STATE (MB) AND COUNTRY LEVEL (PM).

          Conclusion : PAS FOR MUSLIM

O, can you dispute PAS FOR MUSLIM conclusion ??? RPK also does not deny this, but he said PAS can’t do it (hudud) now because the numbers are not enough.

          • Gerakan K,

Even the BN led Government now have separate coaches for women travelling by LRT.

You are lucky to be staying in Penang. If you live in KL and travel by LRT, you will understand why segregation is necessary. We need to protect our females from being molested.

I travel by LRT from Wangsa Maju to KLCC, if you are late to catch the LRT by 7.15 am, then you will understand what it is like to travel in sardine packed coaches. Often my back is bruised, because of being packed together in those coaches with so many people, mostly ladies. You get what I mean? It is not PAS that introduces segregation, even in Bangkok, they have special coaches for ladies too. I just hope you understand.

            • O, see you can’t dispute the “PAS FOR MUSLIM” conclusion. So stop chanting for “PAS FOR ALL” slogan in your posting, as you know that it is not true

You seemed not able to differentiate between KTM’s business decision and state government decision.

I have no intention to insult your religion, but why not the PAS or PAS supporters treat their religion as personal asset and do not mix it in administration ???

Why not focus on good management for the betterment of all people of diverse religions ??? Just like our 1Malaysia PM Najib’s efforts in NKRA. Because of NKRA, the crime rate being reduced. Why there is no compliment for this achievement ???

Finally, I watched today’s Bernama/Awani (I forget which one as I’m continuing switching these two channels) news that a PAS senior leader warns PAS supporters’ leader (the exact names I can’t remember) that DO NOT FORCE the party to do anything as the party usually will not entertain anything being forced into it. This issue related to voting or voting right in PAS.

Why huh ??? From the tone of the report, it seems that there is discrimination in PAS towards its new wing, ie the supporters’ club.

Can you enlighten me on this issue ???

Tony Pua slams BN’s decision to buy 256 vehicles for 8 billion ringgit
    by Hemananthani Sivanandam

KUALA LUMPUR (April 22, 2010): Opposition leaders are urging the government to review and cancel the contract to purchase 257 8×8 Armoured-Wheeled Vehicle (8×8 AWV) for an “astronomical” amount of RM8 billion.

    Tony Pua

“We would like to state upfront that we are disgusted by the transaction. The amount is shocking as each of these non-combat vehicles is priced at a ridiculous RM31.1 million,” said Tony Pua (DAP-PJ Utara).

On Tuesday, DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (Deftech)’s chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil announced at a press conference during the 12th Defence Services Asia 2010 Exhibition that the government has given Deftech a letter of intent, entrusting it to develop the 8×8 AWV programme with the support of the Defence Ministry, Malaysian Army and the Malaysian Defence Industry Council.

“We have an order for 257 8×8 AWV units but right now, we are going to come up with the prototypes meant for testing purposes by the army before we develop the whole range of armoured vehicles,” Mohd Khamil was quoted saying.

Pua said the amount was shocking as other armoured vehicles in other countries cost far less.

“The Portugese army bought 353 Pandur II 8×8 armoured vehicles for the amout of 364 million euros (RM1.56billion) or an average of 1.03 million euros or only RM4.41 million each.

“In 2009, the U.S Army has awarded a US$2.2 billion contract to General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada, one of the best military vehicle and equipment manufacturer in the world for 724 Light Armoured vehicles (LAV) equivalent of USD$3.04 million or only RM9.9million each meant for Saudi Arabia.

“Even the best-in-class main battle tank produced in the United States , M1Abrams M1A2 deployed extensively in Iraq , Kuwait , Saudi Arabia and Australia cost only US$6.1 million or approximately RM19.7 million.

“Despite the price-tag, Deftech admits that they are only at the stage of developing a prototype. The prototype hasn’t been tested but the contract is already out” Pua told reporters at Parliament lobby today.

Pua also said the Barisan Nasional government is “clearly missing the woods for the trees” in the financial management of the country.

“At the same time when the Ministry of Finance has issued strict treasury circulars for all ministries to reduce their operational expenditure by as much as 20%, the Ministry (of Defence) commits to a purchase that completely mocks the attempt by the government to be thrifty,” said Pua.

“We hope the Ministry of Defence will now inform us that this is another decimal point error in the contract value,” said Pua jokingly. — theSun

The question here is not whether we need the AWV but rather why are we paying exorbitant price (again!) for something not proven or tested ? Maybe somewhere, someone is getting huge commission for these purchases(?)

The longer we keep the present government, the faster the country will go bankrupt due to corruption. Then with deminished natural resources, human expertise (due to migration), lack of foreign investments and coupled by tidak-apa attitude of the people, how in this world can Malaysia survive ?

RPK prove that there is and always be much we should be thankful and not give up. As a country we have been wasteful and ungrateful especially the leaders but somehow, this country and people continue to show the cynical and ungrateful is not who we are.

Its why we don’t need politician to tell us what we should or should not be doing personally but rather to stay out of our personal decisions and just do their job. Be it race, religion, economics including social-economic justice, the large part of us will do fine and what is mostly right so long as the government just stays out of it.

There is no second chance in war. What we can do know is to prepare our army with the best defense equipments in order to face the worst possibility, ie to involve in war with anyone including our neighbor countries.

You are one confused person. Are you a DAP supporter ? Do you understand what is a subsidy in the first place ?

Do you know the price of oil in the open market ? Do you like to buy oil at that rate ? That’s the real price of petrol without subsidy. Whether Malaysia is a nett oil exporter is beside the point. If the govt doesn’t subsidise petrol then you will be paying the market rate for fuel. It doesnt take a genius to work out that someone got to pay for cheaper fuel that you and me are using.

The issue is if Malaysians are paying market rate for petrol or otherwise. Obviously not all oil exporting countries subsidise oil for their citizen. Indonesia which is an even bigger oil exporter doesn’t as with many others. China and India on the other hand, do that even though they don’t export oil.

The question here if the govt is keep pumping back the money earned from oil export to subsidise drivers then it is a huge waste. That money can be used for much more productive and worthwhile activities. Pampared by cheap subsidised oil, Malaysians use fuel like water.

  18. From what I hear only around 10% of the attendees were Malaysians while the rest are foreigners. I wonder who are these foreigners and why are they are flocking to listen to RPK ? Are they also the British equivalent of the “rent a crowd” ? Or perhaps RPK’s backers provided free makan and transport “allowance” to “encourage” the attendance ?

I laughed reading RPK’s “challenge” to the Malaysian govt about trying him in the UK. Surely even a half-wit like RPK should have known that no govt can try its citizen for crimes committed in a foreign land.

If RPK is as brave and gutsy as he claimed, why can’t he stay on and fight ? I remember him saying that he was old and rather die in prison when he was arrested under the ISA. But barely after a day without food he changed his mind and came out with tails between his legs. So much for fearless fighter.

If he has evidence to prove BN govt is guilty of the crimes he had accused, why can’t he post them all in his website ? That should be easy rite ? Instead all he did was make even more stupid accusations based on hearsay.

I think it reflects badly on PR supporters when they hold ex-(convicts) like Anwar, LGE and RPK as heroes….

Am very thankful to God that Raja Petra is not brain dead. To be tried in Malaysian’s court by UMNO laws, lest one is brain dead.

You may but not Raja Petra, the witty one.

Why one or two here are so bitter and full of hatred against Anwar, Lim Guan Eng and even RPK, a non politician when these people are actually fighting for democracy, fairness and justice.

Maybe because (they) can no longer receive contracts … since 308… that is why the bitterness and hatred.

My advice is, please learn to stand on our own feet like the rest of us, earn a dignified living, k?

    Reformasi, Hidup Pakatan selama-lamanya !!!

  21. 1. Good one, “O” 5:02 pm

When all else fails, resort to distortion and
    disinformation.

On the other hand, it looks like K is arguing that 90% of the audience who are all “foreigners” come from other Asian countries? (I didn’t know that Britain is largely populated by Asians and not Caucasians and that RPK is so popular with non-Malaysian Asians ;) )

Next, K and Gerakan K (one and the same person?) will say that the photos have been “photoshopped” (doctored) in order to increase the size of the audience!

    2. Dear Kee, you are asking for drug addicts to reform themselves. Vitamin M from contracts is a very powerful drug indeed.

  22. Great debater, my foot !!!

I, too, see that he is a person who has been eaten up by both hatred and bitterness since 308… not good for health you know… i wonder he is bones and skin left…

Health is more important than contracts la!!!

Gerakan K, please advise your brother to “see open” and accept the reality that Pulau Pinang is now under DAP/Pakatan, and it will be for many generations to come. Alhamdudilah !!!

Dont forget your Penang people all love Lim Guan Eng!!!

Even my Ah Ma said Lim Guan Eng “ho liau”, Koh Tsu Koon “beh eong”, faham ke?

Salam brother and wishing you and everyone has a nice long weekend!!!

    Tetap Reformasi !!!

    • Your statement:

      ———————————-
Dont forget your Penang people all love Lim Guan Eng!!!
      ———————————-

This is a lie, my friend. If this is the truth then DAP have obtained all votes from Penangites during GE12 or any by-election.

Sudah tanya kita punya ex-PM Tun Abdullah ke ??? Beliau juga dari Pulau Pinang. Tanyalah dia adakah beliau suka Lim Guan Eng.

Itu MP bebas Yb Zahrain kata Lim Guan Eng bertindak seperti komunis. Apa komen kamu. Yb Zahrain juga suka Lim Guan Eng ??? KTK pula bagaimana ???

  23. guys.. jika anda Malaysian, pasti tahu membaca bahasa melayu.. bahasa ini yang merumpunkan semua bangsa di Malaysia.. hanya orang dulu-dulu tahu perjanjian bahasa ibunda.. RPK hanya datang setelah zaman menjadi moden.. memperkenalkan kemodenan tidak salah, namun kita masih punya jatidiri.. jika anda seorang pakar di luar negara, segeralah pulang bantu anak bangsa dan bangunkan negara.. usah berbicara pintar jika anda sendiri tidak mahu pulang ke tanah air dan hanya berbakti di negara orang..

  24. RPK was full of self importance preaching to the converted at BPP College. He failed to adequately address the substance of his claims that the ISA is both redundant or unlawful and therefore ought to be removed. More important his interpretations of the constitution of Malaysia were both embarassing, intellectually and factually flawed.

That BPP hosted the gathering in their belief this was a question of freedom of speech, expression or an act of definace against censorship is a bit perplexing.

A call to the college and answered by a staffer simply said the college had agreed to hosting RPK’s address on a request by its students mainly from Malaysia and channeled through a particular public inteest organization they were not terribly clear on.

RPK should address thee issues on a more neutral platform and be questioned openly about his views (any cogent views) that are of political significance to a wider Malaysian public.

As it stands he is required to face legal action being brought against him by those he has criminally defamed by making unsubstantiated allegations aboutt involvement in the alleged murder of one Altantuya Sharibu. His allgations invariably are directed against the person of the current prime minister of Malaysia his spouse and others.

He fails to address anywhere the origins of and the means by which the “homeless” letter which made its way to and was presented to the Teoh Beng Hock inquiry which incidentally was scanned onto his website in its original form.

RPK appears to be using the ‘fight for democracy’ in Malaysia as a stalking horse for his own personal vendettas and political ambitions which are mounted on a riderless Brumby.

It would be great if anyone who follows this man is able to indepndently provide some supporting arguments (devoid of personal attacks) to back up RPK’s many nefarious claims against government and individuals.

  25. Gopal Raj Kumar’s comments seem to be the only well written and thought out view in this blog. All the others seem to be immature rantings on both sides of the political divide.

Why the unrestrained adulation of RPK as a hero when he is actually a coward who does not dare to defend his unsubstantiated accusations? Some even say that he did the right thing by running away from the so-called UMNO dictated legal system. Please don’t be so stupid. Even a former MCA president is defending himself in the courts unlike the coward RPK.( The PR members and leaders will only believe in the legal system if judgements are in their favour!)
It will be a pity if all Malaysians believe in the unsubstantiated ‘stories’ and exercise their votes blindly like the ranting anti-government .
    idiots writing in this blog.
As for Gerakan K, don’t lower yourself to the poor standard of your detractors. Be independent and critical in your comments. By supporting the government wholesale does not make you any better than the gullible jokers who will believe anything (this is really brain-dead!) and criticize wildly without facts to back them up.
