I must admit that I have never felt this way before. I left my home town of Ipoh 20 years ago for the island of Singapore. I still can remember vividly my feelings after the SRP results were released. That was when I found out that my classmates who hail from a privileged racial background was asked to submit his papers for an overseas scholarship. He was a consistent non-performer academically. That was the day I grew up. My parents, being protective as they are, have been shielding me from the realities of a society based on racial unfairness. I have been brought up to treat everyone as being made equal and I have many friends across the racial spectrum. But, you know it when your ideals are shattered. I subsequently got a scholarship to study in Singapore and this route remain the cheapest way this island nation obtain talents to complement its own. Even as I read your article now, I feel tears welling in my eyes. I do sense the potential for a new dawn. I only ask my God that this be not a false dawn. Although I will not settle down in Malaysia anymore, I married a Singaporean girl and my son will fight for this country; my attachment to things Malaysian is unmistakable. Despite the years spent living in Singapore, I have adopted it as my home now; I have not given up my Malaysian passport for no other reason than a tenacious tug of the heart. When asked, I often say 'I have no reason not to be a Singaporean. I do not know why I keep my Malaysian passport'. I know of people who held on to their Malaysian passport in the hope of retiring in Malaysia or as an insurance against things not going well, I do not harbour such thoughts. I asked myself bewildered at the results announced. I was telling my friends, that possibilities of the Oppositions to win 14 or 15 seats in Penang are quite high, though down deep I was praying that they would trounce BN completely. As I sat watching the announcement over our beloved RTM and TV3, I began to wonder what exactly is happening. I received many smses that the Oppositions have take over Kelantan, Penang and Kedah, but was not even in my slightest imagination that Perak and Selangor would follow the trail. I am from Perak and damn happy that DAP has routed some of the 'not performing' BN candidates. And, Samy Vellu's defeat was expected. Too long sitting on the same seat can burn the butt. This time Samy had learned that anything hot like Makkal Shakti can really burn. The gallant talk of Sharizat who brushed aside the potentiality of Nurul to contest against her, too has shown that don't judge the size of fire because the heat remains the same ever. Now that PKR, DAP and PAS have passed their test with flying colors, my hope is that all races will be equally represented in their political standings based on the proportion of each ethnic group in Malaysia. We do not want grand projects which kill the nature and human values, just provide us the basic amenities and dignity to live as law abiding peace loving Malaysians with all the rights accorded impartially. "Barisan Rakyat" now need to deliver what they had promised and prove to us and themselves that they are actually a better alternative to what we already have! The people have spoken... we have voted for change... AND WE SHOULD SEE A CHANGE FOR BETTER.... Can Barisan Rakyat deliver (I sincerely hope they can)? For those of us living or from Penang, Perak, Selangor, and Kedah; it will be a very interesting 5 years ahead!!
