Update: It was also a no show at Komtar, where the group was supposed to stage a protest after the Friday solat prayer. In the event, only light strike force and other police personnel were present.

Original post:

No one turned up for a protest at the Aliran office around noon today despite a notice having been circulated over social media saying a silat group would be staging a demonstration outside the reform group’s premises in Jelutong, Penang.

According to the notice, the group was purportedly unhappy over the photo of a picture-stomping incident allegedly taken during the Bersih rally. The photo showed a female stomping on a (doctored?) photo apparently of Najib and Hadi.

Light strike force and other police personnel arrived outside the Aliran office just before noon to monitor the situation but the ‘protesters’ failed to show up.

Aliran, which is part of the Bersih 2.0 coalition and is represented on the coalition’s steering committee, had organised a forum on Bersih 4 in Penang ahead of the rally proper.

  1. Possibly sensing that trouble is inevitable in the red shirt rally on Sept 16, various malay groups are now disclaiming themselves as organiser?

    Pesaka: Kami bukan ‘baju merah’

Najib should be held accountable for any ill consequence (if) the group run amok.

  2. One good comment on Malaysiakini:

During the Bersih 4 rally, orders were given out by Zahid that no Umno members should be seen attending the rally, but now he contradicted himself with “I think that is the individual rights of Umno members”.

Zahid is indirectly encouraging those red-shirt protestors to stage the counter rally (a show of might against the Chinese). If such is not the behaviour of a racist, then what is?

As such, should there be any outbreak of violence, Zahid must solely be blamed and held responsible.

    • Perkasa and Isma have probably distanced themselves from endorsing the “red shirt” rally for fear of being equated with an event that will likely be viewed as “fascistic” and “ultra-nationalistic. The red shirts rally is clearly an overreaction to the Bersih rally. It will hurt the groups endorsing it rather than be add to their stature or support. Perhaps most important of all, a counter rally with such a vague and amorphous objective, to restore or recover Malay dignity and to directly link it with condemnation of the Bersih rally, will look bad for any group wanting to participate

“An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action.’

The quote, Nurul Izzah said, clearly showed that Islam forbade tribalism at expense of justice, and this invalidates the need for the Himpunan Maruah Melayu gathering.

“The excuses from the Himpunan Maruah Melayu gathering are so superfluous that they range from being a response to Low Yat, Bersih 4 to recovery of Umno’s pride – a dangerous list of woes that eventually links back to race.

“One could not be faulted to assume that the planned counter rally is to protect the interests of the few with much to lose at the expense of Malaysians – especially on such an auspicious day like the 16th of September.”

    • Zahid Hamidi will never ban Red Shirt Himpunan Maruah Melayu because he is following the footsteps of TA Razak, Najib’s father who dethrone Tuanku Abd Rahman and took over his position as UMNO President & PM (following) a racial riot May69. So what goes around come around, it is going to happen to Najib and all these will benefit Zahid. My concern should there be properties and lives … taken and destroyed, that’s all. and MCA just stood by to let it happen(?) they have to do someting as they have pledge allegiance to UMNO at all cost…?

    • How was the Perak PR government brought down (and the ‘new’ BN government installed} soon after Najib became the PM? As far as I can remember, there were no election although the then Speaker tried in vain to dissolve the state assembly to pave the way for one. Also not to be forgotten how was how the then Speaker was rudely dragged out from his chair by the police. And above all else, the smug and sinister smile on Najib’s face when he declared that the BN had successfully taken over the Perak state government. So when Najib talked about the need for an election to remove him from power, was he suffering from memory lost or just bare shameless hypocrisy?

      • Najib hijacked DUN Perak after 308 … to (entice) the souls of 3 frogs. I believe karma will come back to haunt him as Tun M is (allegedly) initiating the no confidence vote in parliament in October.

Hanya Melayu sahaja dihasut untuk buat kerja yang susah sementara mereka (Cina) hidup senang dikelilingi air-con.

When Chinese do turn up for street protests:

  8. PM IS RIGHT. SHOW US & PROVE TO US, you have the majorities of the people behind you.
100,000 !!!!! is not the majorities. I am waiting for you to oust me in 2 years times if you oppositions and supporters HAVE SO MUCH CONFIDENCE. Then you can put me in jail.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the ‘people’s power’ to choose the government can only be applied during elections.

The prime minister said at the polls, the people have the right to judge or prosecute the leaders whom they like or hate.

“Elections are the time when we leave it to the people to choose the government. Judge us, prosecute us as the government of the day, whether it is good or not, the people can determine it.

“In between elections, we cannot do anything that contravenes our country’s constitution and laws,” he said.

Najib said this when officiating the Festival [email protected] Salak in Litar Dato Sagor, Kampung Gajah last night.

Najib said it was not that the government of the day did not want to be judged by the people because the government realised it is the people who determined everything.

However, he said the constitution stated that the people’s power to do so was only one in five years.

“The people obtain power not because they wear clothes of the same colour, what more with their rude, insolent and extreme mentality in insulting the government and political party leaders that is regarded as a reflection of the people’s feelings,

“We are not that kind of people such as that, we develop our country with values and decorum even though we differ in views, we do not humiliate anyone.

“My colleagues and I are willing to be judged during elections and if you do not like me to contest in Pekan (Pahang) for instance, I accept anyone who wants to contest in Pekan,” he said.

Don’t oust gov’t through street demos

The prime minister said it was only during elections that it is revealed if the people were with the government or not.

He said within a five-year period, there would definitely be some good times or otherwise.

However he stressed that the people should not allow the government to be toppled through street demonstrations by setting aside the democratic process.

“We are a peaceful country that practises democracy, not practising the law of the jungle and can do whatever it pleases, causing the government to collapse,” he said.

He said the government has plans to help the people but it was misinterpreted as if the government wanted to burden the people, such as the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The prime minister pointed out that changing the government through violence could invite far worse problems as experienced in several countries in the Middle East.

Earlier, Najib had cruised along Sungai Perak to the festival site from the Pasir Salak Resort.

Despite the heavy rain, more than 20,000 locals attended the festival.

The three-day festival which began yesterday features several exciting activities such as exhibitions and sales, competitions, demonstrations and performances, recreational activities and entertainment.

“He has to apologise to the people of Penang. Not to me, I don’t want his apology. But to Penangites as this was an evil slander and lie made against Penang,” he said after launching the Penang Heritage Art district today.

IS THIS WHAT BERSIH STAND FOR….. I have said many times, many are there not because of Bersih or against the govt. They are just there for some jollying and fun. Sure we cannot be serious about Bersih if you read the PM comments. Only those in OBSESSION and INTOXICATED would believed in the opposition and Bersih leaders.

    • Election is the time that we choose who to represent the Rakyat. We don’t get to choose the PM. So that’s why People’s Power you mentioned is not present with the Rakyat. If you respect People’s Power, you would have listened and act to the wishes of the Rakyat. Dare you to call snap election to prove you have the support of the people. The rakyat will never support a leader who spent billions to buy his way to Putrajaya.

Najib has ever bothered or able to explain where the money went and people have not been proven wrong to think that he has cheated using huge sums of money in the elections. People are showing their power now because in their minds, PM has been exposed as a cheat.

    • Peaceful demonstration is a form of expression by the people to raise certain issues of concern. This form of expression involves the direct participation of individuals as opposed to less direct and ‘faceless’ approaches through representatives or petitions. The animated presence of real people, especially in great number, is able to create a greater impression onto others when putting a message across. It is therefore a powerful democratic tool in the dissemination of information and even more so in the run-up to an election or to force a change peacefully within the boundaries of the constitution.

Therefore, it is way off tangent for Najib to equate the recent peaceful rally by Bersih to “practising the law of the jungle and can do whatever it pleases, causing the government to collapse.” The 5 demands of the Bersih rally are merely: free and fair elections, a transparent government, the right to demonstrate, strengthening the parliamentary democracy and saving the national economy. His off tangent criticism in reaction to the massive rally is a mere reflection of the under siege syndrome brought about by the RM2.6 billion scandal which could not be explained away despite various desperate attempts to spin and divert the issue.

  12. Is stepping on a picture or photograph a crime?
Not too long ago , we had seen people burning effigies and flags
    belonging to Israel and Denmark.
Some even shouted to kill a Danish cartoonist.
And there was this incident where money was offered to anyone who slaps a certain politician.
Was anyone ever arrested for that?

MCA came out with a statement that stepping/stomping on a picture of a person is NOT part of Chinese culture.
    Well ,he is partially wrong.
As it is part of Cantonese Taoist Ceremony.
The Chinese Da Siu Yan (打小人) ceremony is about whacking the face of enemy photo or avatar with a sandal
    Don’t believe?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villain_hitting

    • The Cantonese calls it “Ta Siu Yan”
Go to Kuan Yin Teng Temple @ Pitt Street, go to the back hall with an air well, look to the left corner & you will find Ho Yeah (Tiger Deity) precisely for this purpose. Buy an effigy for “Ta Siu Yan” (about 6inch tall) & some prayer paraphernalia from the roadside stalls.
Don’t get alarmed when the guy who does the quickie ceremony spits on & hits the effigy with chha-kiah (wooden clogs) or Bata sandals near to your feet. In the near future, you may get a 3-D printed “Siu Yan” to be hit by granite mortar (for cheng sambai).
You get the satisfaction guaranteed from “Ta Siu Yan” & legally done culture-wise 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • Johan,
I think you have misinterpret the meaning of Da Siu Yan (打小人). The ceremony of Da Siu Yan is not actually to be directed at any particular person but it has become the norm to do it nowadays (especially in HK) which is wrong.

The Taoist ceremony of Da Siu Yan is to drive away not just people but spirits and undivine things that may be attracted to you.

During the ceremony by right, you do not spike or whack on the picture of anybody but to whack on a board or floor to sweep away these things unfavourable to you be it the people, spirits or any undivine thing.

Please check with a real Taoist before making comments. Its certainly is not Chinese culture and definitely not Taoist tradition of whacking on a particular person or enemy.

      • Yang can go to causeway bay in hong kong and tell those ah mahs and ah jias off for not following chinese culture where they chant and whack.

    • Why the police never take action against the Umno chap who tore the picture of the then CM Koh TK?

Why the police never take action agaisnt those people who sent coffin and black cake to CM Lim at Komtar?

      • With two days to go before the “red shirt” rally commences, the Kota Baru Umno division has burnt effigies of DAP leaders donning Bersih 4 t-shirts in a run-up programme to the planned gathering on Wednesday.

In a video clip uploaded on YouTube yesterday, Umno members, led by Kota Baru division head Datuk Mohd Fatmi Che Salleh, were seen burning effigies of DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
