So we have an RTM reporter who doesn’t know who Anwar is and which party Karpal belongs to. We also have an Utusan reporter who doesn’t know what ultra vires means.

If this is the level of general knowledge among mainstream media reporters, what more the average Malaysian?

It’s a sad reflection of the state of our education system, which doesn’t encourage pupils to think. Nor does it want university students taking an interest in social and political issues.

As a result, we are producing more and more school-leavers and graduates who do not know much about the world around them. Nor are they trained to think and solve real-world problems.

Is it any wonder then that more and more Malaysian parents – those who can afford it – are enrolling their children in international schools especially in KL?

In the old days, international schools were only meant for children of expatriates. But now, from what I hear, more and more of the pupils are Malaysians. Isn’t that an indictment – by the elite, at least – of the national education system?

  1. Dear Anil

Why would BN want to have smart thinking people. These kind of people are demanding and hard to govern.

The right policy is to create literate but not too smart people from local schools and universities. The economy need labours to man the machines and do the works. The labours need to be cheap, hardworking, obedient and non-thinking worker bees.

The Utusan and RTM reporters in the news are just these kind of workers. It is not their fault. They are trained to be like that.

Why should our children be like these mindless worker bees?

  2. You’re asking too much, Anil…

I’ve been spending some time with a group of students (5-7 kids; Forms 3 – 5; Chinese & Indian; Malays have conveniently decided it isn’t worth their time) from a reputable urban school in Penang. Despite films like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘The Mummy’, they didn’t know what is a cannon or a Pharaoh. After drawing a cannon, the response I got from an Indian student was “Oh… meriam!!”. After explaining what/who is pharaoh, a Chinese student asked “Do they still have Pharaohs in Egypt?”

Once I foolishly brought up how we’ll have a new public holiday since LGE’s declared 7th July a public holiday to commemorate Georgetown’s UNESCO Heritage status. I was asked “Who’s Lim Guan Eng?”. Another student very proudly replied, “Oh I know! Must be a minister since he declared holiday!”. Not to be left out, a 3rd student asked “Prime minister ah? But I thought Prime Minister was.. ah… what’s his name hah?”. Other questions include “What is UNESCO?”, “Heritage you mean like Sleeping Buddha?”, “Where is Georgetown?”.

These days I know not to expect too much……. ;-)

If you ask me, when the situation is as bad as above, the parents have some role to play too. Spending money on sending kids to a good school is only part of the equation.

  4. Unbelievable.
I would understand if someone wouldn’t know which party KS belongs to or who is DSAI if he or she just came out jail after serving say 25 years of jail sentence but from a civil servant working as a reporter at RTM which is under the Information Ministry.I doubt she even know which Ministry DS Rais Yatim holds.

KTK better mark down DS Rais ministry KPI index.

  6. I agree. Our Malaysia level of education is so low that the MACC officers who tried to detain Wong, Liu’s assistant, do not know what the charge is in order to arrest wong. The MACC officers are so lowly educated that they do not know that to arrest a person on a charge of corruption, they must have substantive concrete evidence and not go on a ‘fishing expedition’. Substantive evidence like in the case of toyol where tons of evidence is readily available, the PKFZ scandal, money politic in UMNO Baru, just to name a few.

I heard a story, not sure of its veracity, that our PM (former Minister of Education) (allegedly) sends his children to an International School? Wonder how true it is?

  11. I really hope what Numb said is just a joke or just limited to a select group of students only. To have Secondary School students not knowing who is LGE,UNESCO Georgetown at this age would have made me skip a couple of heart beats!!!! This was clearly mentioned in the Sejarah book when I was studying and LGE is the Chief Minister that sat in jail and is taking the blame for Kpg Pala issue and yet they are so clueless !!!!! What’s the point of getting all As in school then later in life. Some of these topics can be good conversation topics later on as an adult NOT sains, matematik moden, pendidikan moral or some hollywood, computer games flick. Sigh….. our future generation of workforce is getting shaky here

  12. I am not surprised at all, Anil, at the reported incidents involving the RTM and Utusan reporters. I have been involved in job interviews in the last 2 years recruiting employees and I dare say here 90% of our youth are not knowledgeable enough.

I need an update of USD and Euro against the Ringgit every hour without fail, you think you can do it? The answer was “Euro is which country’s currency, ah?” The candidate was a graduate!

  13. No matter whether we are supporters or distractors of the ignorant reporters, as Malaysians we would find it hard to find a place to hide our faces in the world arena.

This brings to surface the failure of our education system. It’s a crying shame that instead of catching up with the world’s best our youths are showing a total lack of general knowledge even of our own country.

Is it any wonder many countries are not prepared to recognised the degrees awarded by Malaysian universities.

Who in the government are totally responsible for such deplorable state of affairs. The BN ministers, past and present, who have held the education portfolio are to be held solely responsible.

Malaysia has fails its young people … a crying shame!!!

We got previously the so called ‘best’ information minister who couldn’t even string 2 sentences without saying ‘why you’ and ‘you ah’ all the time making a mockery of us Malaysians on Al Jazeera news channel. And now we get half past six reporters whom are not just unable to comprehend the english language, they don’t even know who Anwar is or which party Karpal Singh is from?

BETUL BETUL MALAYSIA BOLEHLAH this country!!!!!

  18. 1. The TBH inquest yesterday focused on his right shoe. I received some photograph of the shoe from readers and the same image of the show also appeared on various MSM and online media. I read the line of questions that was posed to the investigating officer. I must say, I am disappointed with the quality of questions being asked.

    2. The way the questions was asked as if the lawyers were trying to imply that he was killed elsewhere in the MACC office and he was dragged to the window and then threw out of the window.

    3. Let us analyze the sole of the Right shoe and some other picture in MACC office and by looking at the shoe I would not even considering asking such questions. It does not add value.
The picture of the Right shoe showed that heel of the right shoe has come off and there is scraped mark on the sole of the shoe especially on the outer side of the shoe. The upper surface of the shoe is normal. To appreciate the difference one need to compare with pictures of his left shoe that is available on the internet.

    4. The police say that he could probably have been dragged on his side and not from behind based on the marks on the shoe heel. This is a flawed thinking. If someone ones to move a motionless body, he would approach the body from behind and put his hand under the arms of TBH and then pull it as such. No one will drag on a motionless body on its side as it simply takes too much effort and difficult to do. Furthermore one would expect other marks on the trousers.

    5. The other interesting observation is that such a scrape must have been made against a rough surface. I saw a series of pictures that was sent to me by a reader which showed the various parts of MACC office. The floor is carpeted wall to wall. That means the scrape cannot be made against the floor.

    6. The shoe alone tells a lot of story. It goes beyond doubt that TBH did not jump. If he had jumped, the shoe would not be in that shape. From any angle of a jump, and the eventual landing position and the injuries sustained, it is with certainty that I can say he did not jump. So what contribute to the damage to the shoe?

    7. My theory is that, TBH was lifeless. Someone (or two) carried his body and threw out of the window. As the body raced down, the right foot scraped trough over a cemented portion of the building external side wall. The force of impact is so hard that the heel came off and a deep scraped mark was left on shoe.

    8. The I/O said that there were no marks on the outside of the building on the 14th floor. I do not expect to find it there in the first place. Based on the damaged on the shoe, I expect the momentum to be great. Some readers earlier calculated the speed of fall to be at 80km/hour (if you are reading this, please confirm) and the momentum (mass x velocity) is so great that the shoe just came off and landed about 10 feet to 12 feet from the body.

    9. Based on the momentum, the police should be looking for the mark the right foot hit the wall anywhere in between the 14th and 5th floor and not only at the 14th floor. My own estimate suggest that shoe marks could be found anywhere between the 12th and 9th floor on the outside wall of the building. If the police estimated the trajectory of the body correctly, they would be able to find the mark.

    10. That basically explains the shoe condition. More importantly, it reemphasized the possibility that an unconscious (or dead) body was thrown out of the 14th floor MACC office.

  19. I am not surprised. The @#$% up education is to blame. Lacking the reading habit just compounds the problem. What about the WWW? It is a reservoir of information.

The younger generation is hopeless. You only need to talk to some of them. Test them. Interviewers won’t be impressed, I promise you that.

  20. Isnt that how it should be? A reporter should be impartial, not politically affiliated to any party or race or religion. Preferably blind towards any individuals, race, religion or skin colour and what nots. However unfortunately, in this case, I bet the RTM reporter is only living under the bn coconut shell oblivious to anything else outside of it.

The blooming joke was, they are happy working in Singapore and I say, “Good on you”.
I am glad none of my siblings turn out to be a below par reporter, who does not even know the leader of a prominent political party in the country…no wonder, MSM are treated by educated Malaysians as toilet papers!

  22. Anil

When even the children of the then education minister (are believed to) study in private schools, what more can we say? If the mother of the ex-education minister’s children don’t have faith, what more the rest of the population. In any other REAL and not play play countries, that ex-education minister would have had some common decency and honour to resign. But now, he got promoted. Only in Malaysia.
