The leaders of Pakatan Rakyat consider the legal action against Anwar to be “blatant political persecution”; the whole nation is on trial, they said in a statement released today.
Wan Azizah was put on standby to serve as leader of the PR Leadership Council – just in case Anwar was denied bail.
They also reiterated their full endorsement for Anwar as candidate in Permatang Pauh and confirmed a joint campaign.
If Anwar wins the by-election, the Pakatan leaders will propose him as Parliamentary Opposition Leader.

The Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council held a special meeting last night (6 August 2008). We reached the following agreements:
a) We consider that the case against Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim is blatant political persecution, and that it is not only Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim being tried but the whole nation is on trial.
b) In case of Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim is detained or denied bail, then Datuk Seri Wan Azizah, the PKR President will act as coordinator for the council.
c) We fully endorsed Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the Pakatan candidate in the Permatang Pauh by-election and we will form a joint machinery to give him our fullest support.
d) We agreed that when Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim successful in entering the Parliament, he will be proposed to be the Opposition Leader effective on 27 August 2008.

If I may add to my previous proposal for a “BN University” to increase government efficiency in Malaysia:
1) Set up a School of Business with a Department of Entrepreneurship
(the aim is to train students who are good at creating new,
innovative rent-seeking opportunities at tax-payer expense)
2) Add another department to the business school i.e. Department of
Finance (the aim is to train businesspeople who can carry out
government contracts but at maximum cost so as to ensure
consistent cost over-runs)
3) Add a Department of Statistics to train statisticians who can
create new Consumer Price Indexes (Indices) that show low rates
of inflation in spite of the experience of ordinary Malaysian
consumers
4) Add a Department of Politics to offer an advanced diploma in
Machiavellian politics
This proposed BN will be unique and I’m sure it will be a centre of excellence!
