This is the woman the US corporate media are hailing as a “star is born” – the new US vice-presidential candidate from the Republican party. This from an AP report: ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a “task that is from God.”… Palin asked the students to pray for the troops in Iraq, and noted that her eldest son, Track, was expected to be deployed there. “Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God,” she said. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God’s plan.” What utter rubbish. She should look up her bible.
Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman arrested while trying to come to the aid of her colleagues during a large anti-war protest on Monday The corporate media are the same everywhere. Somehow there is great reluctance to highlight popular people’s protests including anti-war protests. Instead the news is invariably presented from the perspective of those in power or from the vantage point of Big Business. And war is generally good for Big Business in the United States’ media-military-industrial complex. It drives up the price of oil, promotes weapons sales, improves media ratings and boosts the popularity of “war-time” presidents, at least initially. And when independent media journalists such as Amy Goodman try to counter the propaganda, lies and spin, they are harassed, persecuted – and even arrested. (She and her colleagues were later released.) This is an account of a large anti-war protest during the Republican Convention that you wouldn’t have [Read more]
Well, there you have it. The ICJ has declared that the jurisdiction of Pedra Branca falls to Singapore by a 12-4 majority. The other territory – Middle Rocks – falls to Malaysia by a 15-1 majority. A glum-looking RTM presentator says Malaysia has “kehilangan kedaulatan over Pulau Batu Puteh” – and then goes on to commend the Malaysian legal team for its efforts. Making the best of the situation, Rais Yatim says it is a “win-win outcome”. He adds that the fate of South Ledge is still to be determined based on various technical aspects. Perhaps now we can focus on eradicating injustices and poverty within Malaysia?
I used to walk along the aisles of the magnificent Westminster Cathedral, the “mother church” of the Catholic community in the UK, in awe of its unusual Byzantine style, its heavenly choirs and the majestic organ music that reverberated across its cavernous interior. The Cathedral has been described as “a very special place of prayer, a refuge from the busy city, a space to find one’s own thoughts.” But last night how the Cathedral must have groaned and sighed as Tony Blair, the war criminal, took to the pulpit to preach on “Faith and Globalisation”. The former British premier converted to Catholicism last year but has so far not publicly apologised for the invasion of Iraq despite huge anti-war demonstrations and opposition from Pope John Paul II in 2003. More than a million Iraqis have died since the invasion. As for other casualties, The Canadian reports: While large U.S. media [Read more]

I must say this sounds like it’s going to be an unusual – if noisy! – anti-war protest directed at Blair. Spotted this on the Indymedia UK website: Sounding Out Tony Blair Stop the War Coalition | 31.03.2008 14:13 | SOUNDING OUT BLAIR: Westminster Cathedral : 42 Francis Street: London SW1 Thursday 3 April 2008 at 7.00 pm (assemble from 6.30 pm) A nun with a buglar alarm is one of many Catholics who will join the Stop the War protest outside Westminster Cathedral on Thursday 3 April, when Tony Blair gives his lecture on ‘Faith and Globalisation’. The protest aims to sound out Tony Blair with musical instruments and sound-making implements of every kind — drums, trumpets, saxophones, violins, cymbals, whistles, sirens, horns, rattles, cowbells, saucepans and cans. At least two choirs and musical ensembles of every type will be attending, along with numerous individual musicians, drummers, percussionists and [Read more]
