Here’s an interesting series of seminar lectures on Culture, Media and Identity brought to you by the Centre for the Study of Communications and Culture, University of Nottingham Malaysia campus. Farish Noor is first in line to speak at these Saturday talks beginning at 10.00am tomorrow at the University of Nottingham KL Teaching Centre, Level 2, Chulan Tower, 3 Jalan Conlay, 50450 Kuala Lumpur. Meet C.S.D.P. @ CikShidaDariParit, a 38-year-old school-teacher and mime artiste from Perak, who is breaking out of the mould of what society expects of her. “I’m not a professional artist. I have no basics in acting, singing or dancing and I’m not an IT expert also. I’m just an ordinary woman and a teacher. I do all the videos by myself from recording, make up till the editing and I’m only using used materials,” she says.

Listen to Johor Education Department director Markom Giran caught on video urging teachers/counsellors to work for a victory for the “government” in the Tenang by-election. Among other things, he urges them to colour-code areas according to the degree of support for the BN (blue) on the one hand, to hardcore support for the opposition (green), on the other. Attention would be focussed on grey areas. Counsellors were also urged to talk to the pupils’ parents and visit their homes as part of this effort.

“Guess how many students scored straight As in the PMR exams?” I asked a relative while reading yesterday’s newspaper. “Twenty?” came the reply. I laughed. “Why? Hundreds-ah?” “No, over 30,000,” I said. Actually, 30,836 to be precise. With so many ‘geniuses’ running around in the country, it is surprising we are in the state we are in.
