This is an article I completed today for Asia Times Online. The BN finds itself on the political defensive after police personnel cracked down on a largely peaceful 28 April protest held in Kuala Lumpur calling for electoral reforms.

Update (3.30pm): Just received word that Hong Kai has been released. Update (1.30pm): Just received word that Hong Kai could be released on bail at 3.00pm. Suaram volunteer Tan Hong Kai has become the first person to be detained in connection with Bersih 3.0.

Update: The MPPP has decided not to take legal action against Jessie Ooi. Wise decision. Jessie Ooi did not observe proper etiquette during the Guan Eng-Soi Lek debate, but MPPP councillors are over-reacting by threatening a legal suit against her.
