Where is their money supposed to come from? After all, people provide us a service and need to be paid for that service in real money. I wish - and it is sad that this will remain just a wish - that we could just work out a decent public transport system. Buses, LRT, ferries, trains, whatever. It doesn't take a genius to know how. Just nip down to Singapore and COPY lah everything they do! I would love to take a bus or the LRT to wherever I go. I dislike driving and having to look for a non-existant park-spot. BUT. There is always a 'but': the LRT is miles from my place, it doesn't go to where I need to go, and don't even let me start on our bus lack-of-system. I think the guy who named our bus system RAPID was evil! It is anything but... and the only place it will take you rapidly is probably your grave! However, if they decide to build the bridge in expectation of more and more personal vehicle traffic, then that's lousy planning. It's imperative to get the public transportation in place and fully integrated to keep the traffic levels in check, i.e. if the population grows by 30% the traffic would only increase by ~5-10%. On another note, there might be a net benefit to the island traffic-wise. Perhaps the government is planning to shift the jobs from the island to Prai (esp. Batu Kawan, Bkt. Minyak...). I think the majority of the jams are during working days when people have to commute. If the jobs are shifted away, then maybe people will be using the bridge more to get OUT of the island than trying to get in. Newer workers would probably not stay on the island as well. As long as they stop all commercial development (like PGCC) on the island, there won't be a lot more people going in. Coupled with good public transportation, they can then start making roads inaccessible to cars (walking and bicycle only) and PG would again become a truly wonderful tourist destination. Many government projects (maybe not this one) do have good objectives, but sadly they are badly implemented, delayed, costs spiral, and various kind of 'commissions' are somehow added. They seem to subscribe to the 'broken window' fallacy as well: notice how TNB/Telekom folks always come dig the roads after the roads have been resurfaced.
