The much criticised Penang Botanic Garden arches, one of which is tilting, are to come down, the Tourism Minister announced today.
Apparently the decision was made after another survey in USM revealed that 71 per cent of 1,225 respondents surveyed at the Garden wanted the arches removed. I am told Ng Yen Yen also said that in future, all Ministry projects affecting Nature and the environment would require consultation with civil society. I don’t think she mentioned the tilt at all.
The decision comes after weeks of public complaints and disquiet expressed in opinion polls and civil society protests.
The whole saga provides several salutary lessons for us; in fact, the decision to bring down the arches is highly symbolic.
Never underestimate People Power in influencing decision-making and even in over-turning decisions that seem irreversible. (Witness how the government also had to back down on sports betting.) People Power has now overcome the formidable arches, which even the mighty armies of imperial Rome would have had trouble bringing down!
It also illustrates the importance of public consultation when making decisions at the local level so that a broad cross-section of views can be heard and local sensitivities understood.
The arches also symbolise all that has gone wrong with our development process, which seems to emphasise mindless projects that pour concrete all over the place and damage the ecology. It is time we become more sensitive to the ecology and treat Nature with the reverence it deserves.
It is also time to hold those who decided/agreed to build the arches and constructed them accountable for the mess they created. Who will foot the bill? The culprits? or will the people once again be asked to subsidise the clearing of the mess through the use of public money?

Glad that good sense prevailed! In future, irrespective of Federal, State or Council projects, if such projects would affect the environment, public consultation is needed before the proposal is carried out.
Bulldozing thru’ projects like the Botanical Garden arches before prior consultation and holding the state govt at ransom for fear of losing other funding, and then having to backtrack costs the taxpayers! For this project, I’d rather have the arches demolished than left standing out of sync with the environment!

Finally it was BN’s leader that made the correct move, ie to demolish the bad taste arches.
So far, LGE also quiet on this matter. It seems that the CM post is very easy one. No need to do anything and just keep quiet.
Someone in DUN Penang maybe needed to raise a motion with intention to cut RM10 from that CM salary as way to wake him up on local issues.

It was the BN (Federal Officer) and the Ministry of Tourism that decided on building the arches as part of the expansion project of the Botanical Gardens.
Gerakan K, don’t try to spin when the arches and the project were carried out without prior consultation, and worse still with threat of withdrawal of funds by the BN-appointed Federal Officer for the project if it was not carried according to time and details already decided on!
After the hue and cry and objections of the general public and NGOs, only then feedback and consultation were carried out! Classic case of putting the cart before the horse, and for whose benefits – to line the pockets of vested interests? Otherwise, don’t tell me that those in authority are that stupid to implement first and on facing open protests then call for feedback and consultation!
Other examples would include:
(a) Nazri announcing in Parliament that the cabinet has approved a new RM800 million Parliament House to be built in Putrajaya, with the present Parliament House being maintained as a Heritage Building! Again after protests, backpedalling by the BN and lately the JKR Minister contradicted his colleague by saying that there was no plan to build a new Parliament House, but rather renovations on the current House is approved by the cabinet. Which BN minister is lying?
(b) The announcement of reissuance of sports betting licence, backpedalling and denial after widespread protests! Then, only call for feedback and consultation. Who are you trying to kid?
(c) The agri. minister who insisted on compulsory implementation of use of a certain type of fish box (a monopolistic move), backpedalling again after widespread protests of many in the fishery sector!
(d) The consumers’ minister who insisted that sundry shop keepers apply for license to sell sugar, rice, cooking oil with a licence fee, backpedalling on removal the licence fee on facing protests and then synchronising the need of this additional licence by incorporating it into other relevant licence. The issue is not so much on the need of licensing the sale of sugar, rice and cooking oil, but the sundry shops already have to apply and annually renew some 11 licences and now the need to add one more!
Many other examples too numerous to list here! If Gerakan K wants to spin further, you can do it at the Speakers’ Corner in Esplanade, Pg, and experience the response like what the Kedah Gerakan Secretary and his gerakan friend received last weekend! Experience the outright rejection of Gerakan in Pg and elsewhere in the country!
I’m glad that the BN government listen to the people wishes (people friendly). Unlike that chairman style that loves to make don’t know even though we talk about it endlessly.

When it comes to people in the MCA, I don’t hold back. I once harass Malacca MCA head Gan Boon Leong(duly left and didn’t finish his dessert) at a restaurant in Malacca. I accorded the same treatment to Fish Head Ling at the Golden Phoenix Restaurant Equitorial Hotel, KL. Stared him down from afar and I started to curse him to grab the attention of by standers.
Don’t know if he meant to dine at the Golden Phoenix but my party and I got ourselves situated while Fish Head Ling and co. were off somewhere else. If I’m paying top dollar for dinner, last thing I want is to be surrounded by a nasty ‘pong’ is all I will say.

Aiyooo Anil… Taking down these arches will be bad for tourism in Penang. I have a better suggestion. Don’t destroy these arches. At no cost destroy them. We don’t want to waste precious public funds now, do we? I mean already Penang Government is already threatening to blow RM50 million of Penang ratepayers money on their inexplicable pet PICC project, right? So, we best conserve whatever money we already have spent in the country to ensure we get value for money. Financial prudence above all, I say. So, take down the arches by all means since they are a threat to safety. But take them down in one piece. Then, we can erect them again in a more touristy friendly spot. I propose we erect one outside the Minister of Tourism, Ng Yen Yen’s, office in Putrajaya. The other one (preferably the senget one), we erect outisde CM Lim Guan Eng’s office on the 28th Floor of Komtar. They both like the senget arches so much, they can keep them and when they (eventually!) leave office, we the rakyat are happy to gift them those senget arches so they can take them home and erect it in their own gardens. Senget home entrance arches to remind them of their senget priorities. Then, tourists can go to these two new locations to snap senget photos for their senget travel memories…

Principle of Accountability (on previous CM Koh Tsu Koon),

these 3 should invariably answer to the public for the slipshod arch AND the contractor must be made responsible for full compensation and cost of tearing down the arch.
Failing which BN has failed miserably to implement a good, responsible and prudent upgrading exercise for Botanical Garden.

And Ng Yen Yen still had the gall to say that spending the RM150K for thearch and then pulling it down is worth it to stop the repeating criticism from the public.
I was thinking more about why pay the RM150K if the arch was leaning more and more? Surely if some contractor built a defective structure which is unsafe, he should not be paid.
Indeed, he should not only have to demolish the structure at his own cost and rebuild the structure properly, but also be subjected to an investigation and fined if found guilty of wrongdoing which led to the unsafe nature of the structure.
Why then is Ng Yen Yen talking about payment of the RM150K being OK?

LGE finally admitted in Chinese press that he has been bullied by a civil servant over the botanical garden project. He claimed that the federal civil servant threaten to withdraw the RM7million project if Penang state government refuse to accept the civil servant’s directive.
LGE admit that he has no choice but to accept whatever the federal government want.
If BN can use a RM7million project to induce LGE to betray Penangites, how can he expect Pakatan’s legislators not to betray the rakyat when millions of ringgit are used to induce them to cross over to be independent legislator.

It’s time to use people’s power and civil rights if our CM got no guts nor creativity to counter the Feds bullying tactics. What’s the point in fighting for Rakyat’s rights to equitable, fair, safe and progressive living when the very leader himself is stymied by financial concerns. Leadership is not about money alone. See what happened to the Chung Ling dragon boat team-an accident? Had the state not allowed environmental damaging development causing heavy siltage in the channel, this needless loss of lives would (probably) not have happened at all.

Don’t demolish those ugly structures. Instead, use them as props to showcase the corrupt practices of the Malaysian regime, and turn it into “points of interest” for an alternative tour route – much like the “ghost / haunted house tour” in London – and offer it to the whole world.
And oh, make that “alternative tour route” a nationwide project. There is a certain “palace” in Klang, which by itself is a monumental showpiece of corruption.
